#1: gti 180 knocking noise- an old car a few of you may know.... Author: markwhittington9, Location: hertsPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:00 pm ---- i have a 2004 gti180 which has a knocking noise, normally happens over bumpy roads, when pulling away and when turning at slower speeds.
being a mechanic myself i thought it would be no problem to find lol.
there is no play in any mounts, no movement in the spings etc when pulled (i have seached previous posts and read about top mounts etc) both front arb links have been changed, o/s/f track rod and track rod end replaced.
noise comes from o/s/f (well seems to come from there) it's pretty loud too!
as for the car you may know bit,it's JamieM's old car, i was registered on here when i first bought the car-seemed to be a regular on here!
also i have been reading the post about dyno results where most ppl say 165bhp is about normal-this one made 183.4bhp and 163ftlbs torque on its dyno run-any ideas why?!?
any hep with the noise is very much apprecited!!

#3: Re: gti 180 knocking noise- an old car a few of you may know.... Author: markwhittington9, Location: hertsPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:17 pm ---- drive shaft gaiters? would they knock?!? there's no splits, leaks no play in the driveshafts (CV joints)
#4: Re: gti 180 knocking noise- an old car a few of you may know.... Author: l_jacka, Location: CroydonPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:21 pm ---- Yeah cv joints, usually they would make a knocking noise when turning at low speeds, but you being a mechanic I am sure you would have checked this, I really can't think of anything obvious at the moment

Author: markwhittington9, Location: hertsPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:28 pm ---- ha ha believe it or not i've tried the other mechanic route (well the rest of us at work!!) i would always expect cv joints to make more of a clicking noise and not so much noise over rough roads

Author: markwhittington9, Location: hertsPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:43 pm ---- not a mobile dyno- tcs performance in birchanger - they do have a mobile dyno but was their permanent one. it would make sense seeing as i raced another gti180 a few weeks ago and quite easily pulled away from it

Author: markwhittington9, Location: hertsPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:51 pm ---- it's been a briliant car since i bought it, knocking noise has pretty much been there from the start though, had new clutch and cambelt when i got it - and a 6 new tyres lol (maybe down ot driving style tho!)

#16: Re: gti 180 knocking noise- an old car a few of you may know.... Author: markwhittington9, Location: hertsPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 3:15 pm ---- well i must admit the engine does seem to move a fair bit but reading older posts i think these were replaced and i can't see why it would be worse when turning
#17: Re: gti 180 knocking noise- an old car a few of you may know.... Author: markwhittington9, Location: hertsPosted: Tue Apr 12, 2011 2:19 pm ---- finally found it guys, turned out to be the o/s lower arm, wouldn't show the play in it untill you pulled i downwards with a lever bar! the weight of the car must have been keeping it pushed into thenub therefore showing no play when on a 4 poster ramp............now where do i find a new one lol
#18: Re: gti 180 knocking noise- an old car a few of you may know.... Author: mattymj, Location: NorfolkPosted: Tue Apr 12, 2011 2:36 pm ---- I was about to suggest that as i had to change mine not so long back. The 180 lower arms from pug have bearings in the bush but i changed mine for solid ones.

Hey im hearing the knocking asewell on my car. Bought less than 2 weeks ago. At service they changed the leftside, i think it was the ball joint, but still the knocking is there. Where can u get the wishbone with no bearings? I live in Finland so ebay or something?
Thank You!
It was not the ball. Some bar there, dont know it in english.
Contacted sportpug. 205 euros for both wishbones. Hopefully it will stop the knocking sound. Only thing that they will have it in stock at september :/
