#1: Replacing the 180, dissapointed by how noisy new cars are! Author: clarky78, Location: NottinghamshirePosted: Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:55 pm ---- Test drove a few new cars, a new Mazda 3 and Mondeo Titanium, and compared to our car the road noise is suprising. Infact in the Mazda it was so bad the wife couldn't hear us talking in the front at 70mph! Has anyone been any cars either Focus or Mondeo size that are quiet? Might test drive a 57 plate Audi A4/6 and see how that is.
Incase your wondering how come my 180 is so quiet, it's because I gutted it and Second Skin'd it quite significantly. Then a change to 4 new Uniroyal Rainsort 2's dropped another 2-3Db I reckon. Until a have tested these newer cars I didn't realise how much it was. I new it was good, but this proves it.. Except for the damn Scorpion exhasut

Er, but the mazda 3 is the size of a 308! And jap cars are usually quite and when built.. Not uite german but better than EU cars usually.

The Mondeo was the top spec with 18 inch RS rims on it, maybe the low pros didnt help the noise, but still they aint that low.

Same. Multitronic too... But lovely on the motorway. Goes like a beast too...
The 5 Series (09) was mint on the motorway too. Put it this way, we erm... "tested" the performance of it and even at 'certain' speeds, the noise levels were brilliant.

Ok, well so would I for playing around in and a weekend car, but lets be honest, the 206 is hardly that fast, maybe fun.. and prior to the sound proofing very noisy for all the wrong reasons. However for journeys over 200 miles, with 3 passengers and luggage that kind of car is nothing but tiring, and in the 206 all but impossible. Firm suspension and noisy exhausts do not a comfortable journey make.. Hence why I will be getting myself a 'weekend' car at later date!
I'm suprised at the responses, as I have not found any of the cars I have been in to be quiet or silent in anyway. Far from it. I meant to get a Db meter app for my phone and try it, though they are not accurate and I have no way of calibrating it, I can compare it with the 180 readings.
The mazda 3 was awful. The brochure even goes on to mention lowest drag coefficient in class and road and wind noise all but non existent... Well at 70mph, the wife in the back couldn't hear what was being said between me and the sales man in the front.. And to me, that says it all!
I'm interested to try the A4, however I'm completely gob smakked that not 1 of the 10+ I have sat in have an arm rest which is just stupid IMO. Also it's quite small inside for it's size, I'm 6'4 and when in the driving position, getting behind my seat is very hard. Hence the look to the A6 which is still less roomy than the Mondeo.
Going to availablecar again tonight, will try out some other options.. I liked the Lexus Is220 but wife doesn't and boot is small anyway, so thats out for start.

As fast as a 180, as economical as a diesel, and is a VW.
When I took it to RSTuning to go on the dyno the bloke who drove it asked if it was electric.
That's quiet.
For a totally quiet ride avoid the 18" alloy wheel option (assuming you have £21k to spare)

even the mark 5 is a quiet car! traveling normally its lovely even on trips to germany and back! but giving it some beans makes the exhaust a lil more gutsy and a good sound from the S/C and T/C.

#32: Re: Replacing the 180, dissapointed by how noisy new cars are! Author: clarky78, Location: NottinghamshirePosted: Sat Apr 09, 2011 4:53 am ---- Went and drove an Audi A6 2.0 S Line and a Focus 2.0 TDCI S yesterday.
The Focus was suprisingly nice to drive, felt bigger than it was, and was surprisingly quiet. 65mph came without any noise to speak of. The wife always comments how nice it is to do 70 in a car and not know it, unlike the 206 which sounds like it's doing 100 at 60! In the front it seemed quieter than the Mondeo :s In the back was quite a lot of road noise but thats easily fixed from the boot. However, it's pretty plasticy, and hard plastics too all over the door cards etc. And for a 2.0 TDi, sloow.
Tha A6 was just a different league unsurprisingly. Lovely and quiet, with a 7! speed semi auto gearbox, and sequential paddle shift! Me like a lot! Not so keen on the VAG styling in the middle of the dash. IMO every VAG car dashboard looks so dated you could be sat in a car from 15 years ago an not know. Always red, hint of blue light and plain square plastic styling and buttons everywhere. However only the one section in the middle where the AC controls are was like that. Also felt suprisingly swift, and quicker then the Focus considering it's extra weight and same 140Hp. Very tempting. But it's a BIG car, and doesn't have parking sensors as standard, and well, i'm pretty sure the wife will prang it pretty quickly :/
As you may have guessed VAG cars are generally out for me. Liked the Leon FR, sat inside, fell asleep from sheer boredom and got out.. Nope. So dissapointing.
The Passat CC looks nice, but is probably the same dull VAG inside and most importantly out of price range I think.
Still to drive a Civic but TBH, after the A6, we may be wasting our time. The inside is not the far off feeling like the Mondeo though in some respects, so we'll see.
So far the Mondeo or Audi seem most likely though the noise in the Mondeo is concerning me, and the running cost of the Audi will no doubt be pricy. Boot is also a bit awkward in the Audi.

It's sure a lot nicer to drive than the pug, but at the same time I miss the immediacy of the pug.. Just cruise around in the Mondy, it's so much more refined and quieter (the engine and exhaust drone, not road noise). Petty the stereo sucks even though it has the £1800 sat nav option! Waste of money IMO, but it was fitted so.
Still not sure it's the right decision, Audi was quiter, had better stereo, and possibly better economy. Can't get the MPG anything like the quoted on the mondeo.. Average 43-44MPG driving like it was worth a billion pounds and made of crystal!

Very comfy, I drove the average 1.8 model that left me a bit underwhelmed on the performance.
Standard kit was nice and I just couldn't fault the driving position.
Maybe check out a type S if comfort is more your thing?
Edit: Comfort WITH power
