Interior Light caused remote c/locking not to work

Hi, heres something weird. Our recently purchased 2002 1.4 Auto wouldn't remote lock unless you waited about 30 seconds or so. I noticed that when sitting in the car and shutting the door the battery symbol came on, the MFD flashed its display, (no warnings) and both interior light and glove box light flickered in time with the MFD. After the 30 secs the lights went out and everything was normally shut-down.
Reading about c/l faults I thought that the driver door actuator was playing up and so liberally drenched the mechanism with WD40, ...no change. Next I took the interior light out of its surround and unplugged the multi-way connector. This cured the fault and the electrics behaved normally.
I took a detailed look at the light unit and found that a previous owner had stuffed a small piece of silver foil across two of the circuit tracks!! Removing this and re-connecting the light everything is now working as it should and the c/locking is perfect.
Any guesses as to why someone would have done this "mod"?
Cheers.

The light will have been faulty so they will have tried to fix it, but it has led to short circuits happening in the BSI. You're lucky that more damage hasn't been caused.

Well, sure hope our luck holds out, I wonder what other "fixes" people have done?
