#1: 180 cambelt Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 6:35 am ---- I just had cambelt and water pump done on 180 at local garage today.
I got it back, but the exhaust sounds louder, and the car seems a bit slower.
he said the pins lined up in the cams etc??
do you know what they could have done wrong? :/
help!
#2: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Big_Rich180, Posted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 6:49 am ---- Probably not used the incorrect locking tools and its been timed badly.
EDIT: or maybe the exhaust could have become loose when they had the engine off the mount, might be worth going round the exhaust joins and tightening them up.
#3: Re: 180 cambelt Author: NICKST, Location: Little hulton (worsley)Posted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 9:19 am ---- My exhaust sounded louder after haveing mine done last month. But doesn't seem down on power.
#4: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Antknee, Location: ManchesterPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 9:29 am ---- My hdi seems louder and up on power now, im loving it lol
#5: Re: 180 cambelt Author: imjeeves, Location: Glasgow / WellingPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 9:58 am ---- That doesnt sound too good.
Having just done the belt on my 180 rally car I realise how important it is to time the belt correctly.
Is it when you rev the car or all the time?
They may well have locked the cams correcly however If they didnt use the correct crankshaft locking tool then perhaps the belt is a tooth out and when you accelerate the valves are touching.
It could just be something minimal like the exhaust loose however I would check with them and make sure the locked the floating crankshaft with the correct tool.
Ask them how the locked it!
#6: Re: 180 cambelt Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 10:00 am ---- cheers imjeeves! what tool should they have used for the crank?
#7: Re: 180 cambelt Author: |SGP|, Location: Truro/Falmouth, CornwallPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 10:36 am ---- Out of interest how much is this, and what's the rec. Time to do it? I'm not sure mines been done
And will all pug garages know how to do it properly? Lol
#8: Re: 180 cambelt Author: imjeeves, Location: Glasgow / WellingPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 11:19 am ---- There is a tool looks like a cone with a point out of the end. It gets inserted into the block at the back of the engine above the driveshaft and locates the flywheel. Any other way of locking it will risk the wrong timing if the crank moves.
It takes a long time to do it. I recon flat out working on it 4-5 hours. Think its about £400-500 to get it done. No not all Pug garages will. I know for a fact my local one doesnt have the tool and just hope 180's dont come in.
#9: Re: 180 cambelt Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 12:23 pm ---- if i got hold of that tool, do you reckon i can rectify mine, or do you think its messed up now its been done wrong once?
#10: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Seabook, Posted: Tue Apr 19, 2011 12:49 pm ---- you will have to do the timing probably.
the tools is just to "lock" the timing (provide the timing before is good)
#11: Re: 180 cambelt Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 10:21 am ---- went back in today, came back, the exhaust cam was 1 tooth out.
Runs as it should now.. SWEET.
#12: Re: 180 cambelt Author: |SGP|, Location: Truro/Falmouth, CornwallPosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 10:35 am ---- What mileage is recommended for a 180?
#13: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Ali_H, Location: Chichester, SussexPosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 10:36 am ---- I did mine at 48000, can never be too careful.
#14: Re: 180 cambelt Author: SAB206, Location: North WestPosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 10:49 am ---- Just had mine done at 36k / 5yrs old.
As Ali said, can't be too careful.
#15: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Andy180+, Location: doncaster south yorkshirePosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 11:54 am ---- did mine at 56k, looks like had one before too . better of doing now for a couple of hundred quid rather than the 1100 just quoted to a customer for a 1.4 scenic due to belt snapped. all 16 valves bent plus 8 valve guides cracked .
#16: Re: 180 cambelt Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 11:57 am ---- Least the 180 isnt the cambelt snapper the old 306 GTI 6 engine used to be
Loads of those never got anywhere near Peugeots recomended belt change interval before snap
#17: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Andy180+, Location: doncaster south yorkshirePosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:12 pm ---- i can still remember the recall on the xu10 j4 n2litre 16 valve fitted to the 306/406 at the time, oh the joys lol

I had one snap on me in a 406
This was way back in 1999
Never was the same again once rebuilt under warranty, then again I got shot of it not long after.
Worse car I have ever owned so far
#19: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Andy180+, Location: doncaster south yorkshirePosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:22 pm ---- i can remember doing a few 406 snapped belts, thats what brought the recall on, did the xu10j4 and xu9j4 engine in 406 and 306 , many an hour spent lapping valves in and draining hydraulic tappets. hell still remember the bruises from that lol. happy days. now i advise a belt on every service i do and always with a water pump. just not economical to do half a job in my eyes
#20: Re: 180 cambelt Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:26 pm ---- I hated the 406 so much I got rid & went back to a trusty 405
405 = better to drive & sweet chassis, basically goes where you point it
I lost 40 mph cornering speed on a certain corner every morning on the way to work when I had the 406
#21: Re: 180 cambelt Author: Andy180+, Location: doncaster south yorkshirePosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:37 pm ---- with you on the 405. i had a mi 16 4x4 for a while and loved the way it drove, best pug i had till i got the 306 for going around bends. still getting used to the 180 even after 12 months. off topic but still love the old pugs. 309 gti was the dogs mi was wicked 306 was fun and so far the 206 is all of them into one.
anyway about timing belts. if you are around doncaster area i am sure a deal could bo done
#22: Re: 180 cambelt Author: |SGP|, Location: Truro/Falmouth, CornwallPosted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:40 pm ---- Well.. At just over 50k, I don't think mine has ever been done, and I've had a horrible squeaking under the bonnet for ages! Somewhat worrying, but I just don't have the cash to get it changed yet!
#23: Re: 180 cambelt Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Apr 20, 2011 12:44 pm ---- Way out of my area im afraid but cheers anyway.
The again a TU3JP timing belt isnt that difficult to do
As for 405's
94 - GTX then 95 Exec
Rebuilt the leather manual front seats on to electric STDT frames & attached the seatbelt pretensioner brackets, then modded the heated seats to include a thermostat to stop them burning out in the normal 405 way.
STDT wiper stalk as well for varible timer on the wiper delay.
