#1: Cone filters and my car... Author: Necro, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 9:53 am ---- ... ok, I know cone filters aren't liked too well on here but I'm not interested in your opinion of them so no posting that please.
What I'm looking for is an idea why my car is being weird.
Right, I've had 3 different open cone filters on my 206 GTi and none of which has made any difference to throttle noise. The latest one, (that luckily I didn't pay anything for) is a Pipercross Piper X foam cone.
I've heard cone filters on a few GTi's and have just also been watching them on Youtube so I know what its supposed to sound like.
My question is... why does it make no difference noise wise when it should???
#2: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 9:54 am ---- Have you tried the standard airbox?
It will sound different then.
#3: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Seabook, Posted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 9:58 am ---- drill a hole in the filter then it would sound different.
#4: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: juanfernandes, Location: LondonPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 10:05 am ---- I take it your listening to ones with foam/closed cone filters as opposed to open cone filters?
#5: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Necro, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 10:09 am ---- No, been watching vids of open filters and like I said, the latest filter is a foam one.
@CD-vRS I had a standard airbox on before and there's no difference in noise, whether its the airbox or a cone on.

close clone filter is a good way to reduce noise level.
and it sounds almost like an oem airbox

#9: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: juanfernandes, Location: LondonPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 10:17 am ---- So if have heard GTi's with this exact cone filter and yours doesn't sound the same.
Ok, is there a lot of sound difference?
What about the piping used from the filter back to the throtle - is it the same?
#10: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Necro, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 10:44 am ---- Heres a pic of it on my car...
#11: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Andy180, Location: Stoke on TrentPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 10:52 am ---- do you not get any noise at all ?
#12: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: usher, Location: northallertonPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 11:40 am ---- i changed mine from the same as yours to a viper and i must say itr made a nice improvment in throttle responce and a nice induction roar at 3k
#13: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: kingdom200, Location: Leamington SpaPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 11:46 am ---- they will make a massive difference to noise lol well they should every car i have had and every car i know with even a hole in the air filter makes it sound more airy, i think you need to put the standard box back on take a drive then put the old one back on and u will notis it..... failing this if you just take it off completely and if it make any noise difference then your filter is probably well compact and quite air restrictive
#14: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: usher, Location: northallertonPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 11:48 am ---- has it been cleaned probably has but worth asking

No.
Had my ear right by the filter and revved and sounds just like the airbox did.
#18: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: juanfernandes, Location: LondonPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 2:04 pm ---- Get a video clip of it up on youtube. We can then tell you if what sound it emits is normal or not.

#20: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Andy180, Location: Stoke on TrentPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 2:52 pm ---- weird i tried an open cone on my 180 briefly and it was horrificly loud
#21: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Tue Apr 26, 2011 2:55 pm ---- You do know you have to hit the throttle hard to get it to make a sound
Slow acceleration wont make any noise

An open cone will be louder than a closed one.

#24: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: kingdom200, Location: Leamington SpaPosted: Wed Apr 27, 2011 5:00 am ---- WhAt was it?
#25: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Necro, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Wed Apr 27, 2011 5:41 am ---- Look at the pics and its abit obvious. there's a split in the plastic that attaches to the throttle body.
Its sucking air thru that instead of thru the filter.
#26: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: kingdom200, Location: Leamington SpaPosted: Wed Apr 27, 2011 6:08 am ---- Soz pics didn't come up on the phone

#28: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: Jamie, Location: Ring y0Posted: Wed Apr 27, 2011 6:23 am ---- Also it's only really noticeable when you're driving, you won't get the full effect whilst revving stationary.
#29: Re: Cone filters and my car... Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Wed Apr 27, 2011 6:24 am ---- I have a spare TB cover if you want it.
