#1: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Sun Feb 07, 2010 4:05 pm ---- Spotted the car on pistonheads with 37k miles from new and on original engine, in short, i just had to have it! It's now done 38.5k miles.
When i went to fetch it and pics the day after
Me and Graham at our random stop for a blether as the motorway journey gets a bit tediously boring after a while! lol.
She made it home quite alright! I haven't cleaned either car here by the by, this is how the 309 looked after doing about 500 miles...
Wheels were a bit more corroded than i first though, this is in the list of top 3 things to do
This is the only bit of rust i found without having to look really hard Easy fix this though!
New spark plugs and leads were done not so long ago.
Master cylinder and servo were replaced a few months ago
Original dealer plates - loving how it was still peugeot-talbot...
And original dealer sticker
Included with the sale of the car (unknown to me!) were a fair few extra these include:
The original 309 atlas
And err...all of this! Mot's and receipts...
Original key fob, additional button for the alarm and an original dealer key-ring torch!
Few extra bolts, but was also nice to have an extra key for the pug locking nuts and their original box.
£2 off ebay so it's just a spare the old owner said
Gasket and rocker cover which the ex-owner was going to have powdercoated but never got round to it. So he gave it to me anyway but I like the idea too.
Best bits...This is a little 309 scarf or such like
And a bomber jacket from 1992! It fits me but it's a bit tight!
And me modelling it! pmsl It's hardly been worn by the looks of it.
Finally, both cars together, new and old Gti's!
I'm loving the car Although it does have a minor oil leak from somewhere It's only leaked after one journey though. Will get a diagnosis on that on Tuesday!
Tomorrow I will probably give the interior a little valet and scrub the matts - i have a good rubber care product that will get them gleaming once again The boot carpet needed a clean as i gave graham a spare nimrod alloy wheel as he doesn't have one for some reason? We took that on the journey down but it's made a lovely mess of my boot carpet
I'll give the bodywork in the engine bay a good wax as well as the exterior, and i've heard vaseline is a good method for keeping dirt off the inside of the arches and it helps to stop them rusting??
Amazingly the clutch isn't heavy, it in fact feels like my old 1.1 clutch but with a lower biting point and more snatchy The steering feels very tight, the gearbox seems very smooth.
Intermediate service 15/09/09
Car is fine and up on the ramps it's completely rust free having been undersealed, i knew this but it was good to have the proper ramps to have a good look.
I thought I had an oil leak, but but it turns out the leak is from the power steering - So i just need a bit of pipe replaced. I need to go back to get it looked at to diagnose exactly which pipe it is.
Power steering leak fixed 18/09/09
Just needed a new clamp on the end of a hose. This was good news, better still it was fixed for nothing and that's a price you can't beat!
First proper clean 30/09/09
I did a few wee niggly jobs today that i have been meaning to do since day 1!
Wasn't keen on the mahoosive GB badge on the boot lid.
Before:
And after:
And then i went to town on the cleaning.
I'm also on the hunt for baby hair/bath brushes for kids under 18 months or something. Stuff with really soft bristles so i can tackle the leather. They're mint but could be much better
Todays efforts and i removed the pistonheads window stickers too - they looked naff!!
Before:
After:
Makes a big difference i think, looks more original and cleaner without extra stickers not to mention that there's nothing original about them either. A good lathering of tyre shine has helped make the wheels look a bit better too in general!
BEHOLD! A Door! 01/10/2009
It was well packaged much to my delight and in good condition...
...However there are about 5 dents and a 5p sized spot of rust which need seeing to! But over-all though i'm chuffed with it!
Double Delivery
Well I had a double delivery today! Shoiny bits and a set of rear lights! I had to buy the pair in order to just get one of them replaced, but well worth it as there was a 10-15cm crack in the lens.
The lights after a good clean!
Alternator fan and pulley
Got this for free!
Fuel regulator
Throttle body
It's really well polished...
Alternator bracket
Niggly Jobs
Niggly jobs again!
Here's the crack in the light, when i took it off i noticed it was cracked on the back as well which worries me into thinking that it's had a rather good shunt on that side before but all seemed well behind the light apart from a little lacquer peel
Gave the shell behind a good clean before placing the light back in.
By trying to keep it as original as possible i swapped the rubber seal and the bulb panel across, which were much cleaner anyway!
Muchos better!
Removed the rusty brackets for the cd changer to find that they've badly stained the carpet. I need to have a look behind the carpet to see if there is any further rust damage (ie yet to figure out how to get the carpet off properly...) , however I cant see any rust at all in the wheel arch!?
When i replace the bracket bolts i think the best method would be to stick a rubber washer on the back and a nut to keep things water tight instead of just a random screw though the shell. However I'm worried that the nut requirement might hit the tyre? Will soon see after a bit of investigation.
Note the highly rusty screws! The brackets will be rubbed down kurusted just in case and painted black again.
I managed to get the fuse box to stay the hell up in the glovebox so the lid clip on one side that's broken is now "fixed" with some double sided tape! I dont use the glovebox anyway so this was a cheap resolution to a problem and tidies things up a bit.
Lock-up and cam belt cover
FINALLY got a lock-up sorted for her...so i've chucked some of my car bits in here (still bumpers lying at the side of the house lol).
It's pretty narrow, but there's enough room on one side to open the door and i can walk round 3 sides of the car.
So that's her tucked away over the winter
Meanwhile i managed to get my hands on a metal cam belt cover which are only on the phase 1's. So I gave it a good clean today.
Turned out not too bad at all Only problem is because it's an old chunk of metal it's not exactly nice and flat to work with so there are some odd dents i can't get to on the outer side.
Sanded/wet sanded down
Then applied some autosol to get rid of the sanding scratches.
Service History Found!
Well since the car car came with little service history, i did a bit of digging! My plates still show "grove of rugby" and the original V5 is a rugby address. Knowing that the original owner was a Peugeot technician i decided to contact Peugeot in Rugby to see if they still had any details of the car... soo errr... yeah..more than i thought they'd have on the computer system and the service manager is going to send me a printed/approved version in the post free of charge it seems!
Here we go..
07.02.05 28998 - Full service and MOT

Wheel lip refurb 28/11/09
Well...Pictures speak for themselves really i hope! But I will blether anyway...as i do so well.
Decided not to get them refurbished as in the main the finish on the centres is fine for now. So i'm going to keep my £250 in my pocket for now and used what i had lying about in the garage to do wheel number one, the test wheel.
This wheel is the same one that's shown up there by the by ^^ ie it's the worst one! One done with a few niggles to sort and 3 to go...
What a mess having the weights on the outside made to the rim!
A nice 50/50 shot for you detailing fanatics.
Say it together now...."mmmmmmmmmm"
I finished this one at 12.50am Didn't realise where the time had went. Started about 9pm, took 45mins to go the shop. So aye, around 3hrs to do the rim. No machine polishing was done here. I don't have the right pads, the wool one i have is FAR to big for the job. So autosol and 1200 grit wet and dry was the final stage instead. This was after a chisel (you may cringe but the results are ok right? ) and heavier grit sand paper sesh.
1st wheel comparison
Wheels finished 30/11/09
Well after a further 9hrs in the garage dancing away to some chilled house sessions on the ipod...the wheel polishing is done!
They have all been balanced up on the inside too and are ready to go. I feel that i might try and scrape a few hundred together to refurbish the inside and centres of the wheels though. Noticeably corroded in some places. I might do the insides myself to save some money but I might not be saving that much, so i might as well get a pro finish. Anyhoo...that's a possible job for next year.
The day started by whipping all the wheels off so i could take them to ecosse in my 206, to save some mileage getting racked up on the 309, plus 2 of the wheels were completely unbalanced so the 309 would feel like it was going to fall apart! I gave the 206 a clean as well as i've not touched it in about 2 months!!
Here's the other 3 befores:
All done
The wheels were put back on the car and it made a noticeable difference
I then went back to ecosse again with the 309 to see how much my bodywork repair will be to give me a kick back into reality! I have seen other niggles on the car that need attending to other than the spoiler and the n/s/r door. Although, Scotty noticed some lacquer peel on all doors of which he is quite right to point out and something i want to sort, this was a point raised elsewhere on the car too But hey, at least it's not rust! Basically 2 sides of the car getting done so that it's spotless.
My o/s/r door was diagnosed as needing an actuator.
17/12/09
Actuator has arrived. Best £12 i have ever spent on a car. I am going to fit this before christmas! Thank goodness the car's been in a lock up whilst one of the door's wasn't locking!
The winter/snowy cold got to my battery and it just wouldn't hold charge so got myself a new one. I also thought the alarm had faults, it turns out the fault was just not enough juice in the battery - i thought i was going to run into immobiliser problems when fitting the new battery but now when i think about it...no idea where i got that from! Anyway, a few celebratory pics. She lives again!
Looks alright in the bay i think.
It started to snow again today!! So i've not got round to fitting the actuator.
Task 1 - MOT
GOOD NEWS! The car passed it's MOT with one advisory in the end. It was originally 2 advisories but it was over-cautiousness on the tester's part. First of all there was a tiny hole in my exhaust - now welded back up. The supposed second one was the power steering - the tester thought there was a leak but it's residue from a repair i had done to the power steering system a few months ago - that's all been sorted!
Task 2 - Actuator
I then come home and since it was dryer, i decided to fit that actuator! Nobody told me how if you have a hand that's larger than 5cm by 5cm you'd find this wee job fiddly!
Comparison of new and old - note the one that's stuck and not springing back. Hence complete failure of being able to lock a door!
Where's the actuator? lol.
There it is!!
It's nice to know my car now locks properly - so i can leave it parked up now without being broken into easily lol.
Task 3 - Number plate screws
The second little task of the day was to fit some number plate screws as the existing ones were easily 17 years old! I had to rip the old plastic covers off then get a pair of pliers to twist the screws out L-) This job took far longer than the actuator job did but it was worth it I think! It's the little things that freshen things up.
Future Task 4 - Fogs
Got a hold of a brand new and slightly used set of fogs. The cleaner one is for a 405 mi-16 and the other for a 309. But they're interchangeable I am of course using the 309 one but took them both because it's a brand new Sien/Sein/genuine pug one and will go nicely in my spares box.
I'll hopefully be able to fit the one needing replaced tomorrow!
Chuffed with progress as per usual...
Lastly, nothing too excited but i managed to sort out the n/s fog light
Future plans from here is to get chrome vinyl for the moulding inserts and mainly to get the bodywork sorted out and looking mint as follows:
- Old n/s/r door removed, all ancillaries transferred over to new door including glass.
- Fill in/pop out small dents, treat a tiny spot of surface rust, then paint new door and fit.
- Get rid of old repair job marks (filler that's not been sanded down well and you can see sandpaper marks in the paint!) and repaint, this is on n/s/r arch and quarter, and on the front door as well which will need painting anyway because...
-There is lacquer peel on all doors where the moulding has been rubbing against the paint. This means the front arches (which have deep scratches in them anyway!) need flicking over and blended in as do the rear quarters, and on one side it'll go up to the roof line because of a 10p spot of lacquer peel.
- There's a significant ding in the o/s/r arch which needs a bit of persuasion then repainted of course - in it's present state the paint is chipped to bits.
- There is also a rust patch above my driver's door lock.
- The spoiler is scratched to bits so that's getting removed painted and re-fitted as well.
The boot lid itself is fine and the bonnet was painted 2 or 3 years ago to get rid of stone chips. There is one there of which i'll attend to myself The roof has 2 scratches on it which aren't too noticeable and should machine polish out, i just need to figure out how to use mine first on a scrap panel. Chrome Mouldings
I've got some red side moulding trim being delivered soon to me so i can cover them in chrome vinyl. I'll keep the originals a-side somewhere, they're not too bad but one side on the passenger door has snapped off! So i need them all to match. Trying to find front and rear mouldings now as you can only get chrome ones from pug now and they're around £80 for the set and they won't match any vinyl added to the ones at the side...
#9: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Ali_H, Location: Chichester, SussexPosted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 7:10 pm ---- Possibly one of the best progress thread i've read. Like your work mate, looks immense. Show and Shine at Pugfest?
I've thought about the show and shine at pugfest but i know these 2 boys are going too, in saying that, i think it's £3 to enter! If you enjoyed reading this, you will love these 2, this car has absolutely NOTHING on them...

yep they are stunning, but it would sooo annoy me if it rained.lol
That's why it's in a lock-up duuuuuude! I really was cringing as i had to wait 6 weeks for one to be cleared out so I could move in...
#13: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Feb 24, 2010 10:42 am ---- After much waiting for the post office to deliver me some side strips - they finally arrived last friday.
So...i've had a wee play with them to see how the chrome vinyl would look on it, or if i should in fact get them sprayed chrome or do more research into what i need to do next with these.
So i started by removing them from the gray moulding, taking some old red vinyl off and giving them a good wash.
I did the smallest one first to see how it looks because the quality of the stuff on the sheet looks terrible as it had a million air bubbles go underneath when unrolled but chopping off a little bit, flattening it then wrapping it seemed to do the trick.
Here's a sneak preview of "one i made earlier"
I've done one of the longer ones but it's got a few creases in it so i'm going to start again since there's loads there and it was only £7.50-ish for a meter by 600mm
Chuffed so far, hope the rest turn out good too....even though i've just realised that normal gti trim has a totally different profile than the goodwood ones which are just flat but i will carry on anyway!

#14: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Feb 24, 2010 5:16 pm ---- After realising they're the wrong shape and actually preffering the flatter goodwood style anyway...i've just bought some from this guy on ebay and the passenger door trim is lovely and un-snapped, unlike mine!

#16: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Sun Mar 07, 2010 3:39 pm ---- Cheers buddy! Here's more for you to read lol.
I AM VERY EXCITE!!
I have now managed to get my hands on an original head unit, with aerial booster and the cd changer controls/FM modulator. I haven't got these yet but these are pics i've been sent. Should clean up a treat with a bit of Brian care
This is how the cd changer controls are mounted, just to the right of the steering wheel. But i suppose you could mount it anywhere, but i think here would be best to keep the centre console looking fresh.
I have also managed to source a cd changer to go with this with FM transmitter adapter I haven't got pics of this yet though!
For those not in the know these were an optional extra on the goodwood so that a casette only had unit could take on board the necessary controls of the cd changer and this is just like your average FM transmitter for an ipod! Only that it has extra buttons and is a cd changer that you're getting the music from! Old skool technology...got to love it! i hear the quality is pretty fahooking awful but this is a small price to pay for retro coolness.
Also had delivered to me a set of rear inserts so i can wrap them in chrome vinyl too. These are only available in chrome for around £22 per side, i got both for £25 delivered which will do nicely. I will just buy the front two from a dealer because they're only £17-ish per side and i can't be arsed waiting! £20 saved here is £20 saved though all the same!
I am chuffed with my findings, that's for sure

#17: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:22 am ---- My supercool stuffs have arrived
This actually looks pretty damn straight forward to fit. It's just a shame the control unit itself is hard wired to the cable from the aerial booster box/general box of tricks which will make it it a little harder to install neatly.
Anyway, I have one question...behold...tiz a bus input So does this mean that i could just plug in EITHER a cd changer FM transmitter to a cd changer when i get one (still waiting on people getting back to me :-\ ) or i could run a bus lead into the box of tricks and it'll play that way too?
I'm guessing that the wireless method will be much cooler for showing off purposes though at pugfest L-) and it would save me re-routing another cable unless the present pioneer one is a 13 pin bus cable too which would allow me to chop and change \:D/
Player is pretty clean apart from one worn button and the corner of the display.
This however is in much better condition than i thought it was gonna be. It looked scratched at the top on the pics above but it's actually spotless.

#22: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Jon, Location: 666ft BelowPosted: Fri Mar 19, 2010 6:03 am ---- Loving the Old Skool ICE Brian
#23: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:46 pm ---- haha, cheers Jon. I like it myself, others (G!) think i'm mad for removing the old skool pioneer stuff. But i think it'll put that in the Miami.
I was all alone tonight and found myself fiddling with the chrome strips again as I wasn't happy with one of the side strips. It had a crease in it which needed rectified by err...starting again! I also did the last side strip which turned out really well...again it was the second time round L-) ~x(
I then faced my fear and tried to fathom out how I was going to tackle the corners of the bumper mouldings as i have a set in the post coming to me soon for wrapping!
So in the name of tradition, buggering it up the first time was definitely the way forward!
It's actually going to be a lot harder than i first thought as the radius of the top half of the strip is different to the bottom which is much tighter, thus creases and pleats a plenty are a formality.
I then remembered that you can make little cuts all the way along a curve and fold each little flap round so you get no pleats/creases. BUT! I still have a minor dilemma as I can't figure out how much of the edges of the chrome strips you can see when fitted to the car. I'm hoping part of the plastic trim actually hides the edges as there are little dots all the way round the bend which is the end of the cutting marks. I'm going to try again with another scrap piece of vinyl and see how i get on. The plan would be to try and see if i can get away with stopping the incision just short of where the edge of the trim starts. But i fear i will still get little creases instead.
All good fun eh...On the left hand side of the curve, the cuts were made much closer together and i started to cut less close to the edge of the trim.
Getting there, getting there...
#24: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 5:57 pm ---- A few other bits arrived today
The custom/original plate idea is what I had planned to get redone all along but when i seen how good Andy's ones were I got the guy's details off him. Safe to say i'm impressed once again
Old plates:
Can't get the code at the bottom in because it would have been chopped off, it's not wildly important anyway so to be on the safe side i just didn't include it. The spacing is slightly different now too because there's been new rules for that in the past 17yrs so it's not quite aligned for that reason too.
I also got plenty of cleaning goodies but I won't bore you all with that quite yet =)) Here's the main one that arrived today though to restore the colour onto my driver's bolster and to generally protect the leather. It looks to be good stuff B-)

That's all for now.

#25: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:16 pm ---- love the plates bri and your doing well with the bending lol it would take me a few attempts to do that
I tried again with the corner with heat etc but it didn't make it much better at all.
My most recent attempt:
My problem is: the lower edge curves in giving it a narrower radius, therefore there are extra bits that have carried down from the "larger radius" at the top result in all these farking creases. Next bit will be working from the narrower bit upwards.
These just cant be half arsed as they're on full view all the time. It's every corner of the car. My next plan is to start from the bottom and work up. If that doesnt work i'm gonna buy more vinyl and use larger sheets to allow for twisting of the paper by just moving the material over a bit. I'm limiting myself to little thin strips atm and i wonder if it's hampering things.
This was meant to be simple :)) Chrome paint would be good but it would flake off the moment they're moved to put them back in, even with plastic primer. You can get a special primer that can cope with flexibilities. ie used to paint rubber! But this costs a fortune.
#27: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:34 pm ---- haha rather you than me, i was going to say maybe chrome paint but i see what you mean about flaking off.
i would of thought tho doing it with a hair dryer would of worked as i watched vids on utube how to cover things with carbon fiber vinyl and that's what they used.
so what toy you bringing to FCS??
#28: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:43 pm ---- The thing is as i think i've also figured out that it might not even be vinyl?! I think it's difficult to produce thin vinyl?? What i have is more of a large sticker format really. I have thought of another method but it'll cost me more pennies to experiment with the idea Needs must though.
If the Goodwood's done in time, i'll take it to FCS. No point in working on it since October and not showing it off eh lol. If it's not finished though, i'll take the GTi 180.
#29: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 6:53 pm ---- haha mint thats the way to do it if its not ready i'll just take my spair gti180 i have lying around haha
haha mint thats the way to do it if its not ready i'll just take my spair gti180 i have lying around haha
...if that fails me i've got a spare 309 GTi in Miami Blue kickin around as well
Cheers SGP - the wheels are good but i need to check out my spare wheel which is also a goodwood style wheel, If the centres are in better condition i'll give that a refurb as well to match the rest and just choose the worst looking one to replace it with. So i'll see what happens there

#33: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Bailey, Location: Finding Dr. RobotnikPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2010 6:14 pm ---- Bet that cost some if there that rare jeez!
#34: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Jonno, Location: Boston/Spalding LincsPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2010 6:17 pm ---- everything to do with the car is epic brian. real collectors item, both the car, history and extras!
£21 for an 18yr old piece of paper is pretty steep but I aint gonna get one otherwise
That was the aim of the game there Jonno - original and finding extra bits of history
#36: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: |SGP|, Location: Truro/Falmouth, CornwallPosted: Fri Mar 26, 2010 5:49 am ---- If the car could talk it'd be proud of you!
really good idea getting all the original bits n bobs, it really adds to the cars history!
#37: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Thu Apr 01, 2010 1:17 pm ---- Well, i got fed up trying to put chrome vinyl on the bumper inserts...SO! I needed a front set of inserts fairly pronto so i got some from pug..
...with some discount of which i can't figure out why although i did mention i was a PSOOC member but IIRC...nobody has been there before with PSOOC membership and they buffed my letter i sent to them last year. Anyway...
I thought, well i might as well compare my finish and peugeot's finish and see if it's close, if it is, i'll order up the rear strips.
Believe it or not my one is on the right and Peugeot gear is on the left!
So it looks like i'll just order the rear ones and call it a day. The length of these strips just aren't long enough for the sides! Not to mention the different clips of course. BOO!
#38: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon Apr 12, 2010 12:04 pm ---- Well as above i ordered up some new front chrome mouldings, i've ordered ONE rear chome mouldling - the other is NLA but sourcing it from Belgium/Holland hopefully
Today the car got taxed again and i swapped the battery from the Miami into this one because it's a proper varta ! So it will look better for showing purposes.
There's tiny spots of surface rust in the engine bay which i want to attend to, so i got some paint mixed up and hopefully it's a good match!
I then gave the old mats a good clean and treated them to some autoglym vinyl and rubber care to start building up a good layer of protection on them. So hopefully by the shows they'll be gleaming and looking brand new
The next task on the list was to fit the original head unit and cd changer controller. I started from the back of the car, removing the old pioneer cd changer lead and at the same time ran the original cable down the car, and when i got to the driver's side i popped the side panel out of the centre console and was faced with this...
It was all going so well!! I am awaiting a reply from someone to see if they have a spare connector block. In the mean time i'll just need to wait....
....which is s**te.
So the next thing on the list is to clean the leather and treat it with the leather care colour restoring balm. I also want to give the boot carpet a good clean as well.
I am going to inspect the spare wheel and see what condition it's in, if it's better than my "worst" current wheel on the car than i'll see about using that instead
I'll remove the front bumper and hopefully the new front bumper inserts will go on with ease! I'll remove the side ones and get them on too.
Plenty plenty still to do...
#39: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: wagsy206, Location: Coatbridge, LanarkshirePosted: Mon Apr 12, 2010 12:32 pm ---- fair coming on with project restoration brian. thats a bummer with the connections though . chin up. it always seems to work out for you.
so you got any plans to buy anymore classic pugs??
#40: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon Apr 12, 2010 12:52 pm ---- Cheers bud! It's getting there, it's all just loads of very little things but it'll make a big difference down the line. EG the painting of the battery tray will be a job well done as the next job for the miami is to do that...i'll be catching it whilst it's just solid and no more
The wiring a simple fix but it'll be time consuming that's all. I already foresaw that it would take a bit of guessing of where and how to route the wire for the cd changer controller because it goes on the right hand side of the driver i believe So it's a bit of a bits of dash off job to feed it through. 309's and 205's are so easy to take apart and put together though from what i've found so far so it should be ok to do.
No more plans to buy more classic pugs. These 2 will keep me busy for a VERY long time
#41: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: wagsy206, Location: Coatbridge, LanarkshirePosted: Mon Apr 12, 2010 1:29 pm ---- lol. with the rate youre going at it, i doubt itll take you too long. you seem to know your way around stripping and rebuilding now. should get your own company set up .
wiring is always a time consuming nightmare. and thats coming from a spark. lol.
i cant wait to see the cars when theyre done man. dealership quality at its best. we all know what youre like when it comes to a beautiful finish.
#42: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Tue Apr 13, 2010 4:36 am ---- Nah! I want to get the rear axle re-built and the underside re-rust proofed as it was done 5 or 6 years ago but i might as well get it re-newed at the same time. I wont be doing this till next year though!
haha..hardly dealership quality but thanks for the vote of confidence
#43: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Tue Apr 13, 2010 12:34 pm ---- I decided to take myself out of the interior today as I was getting no-where fast. The leather care products i bought did a good job of making the leather feel nice and soft again by injecting a bit of moisture in them! However the colour enhancement wasn't as good as i thought it was going to be. It's better, but not by miles!
So i whipped out the battery and set about cleaning up this area in general!
to get into the area better i decided to take the brackets off the power steering reservoir so i could move it to get my hands in about there to clean it. It was also clear that the reservoir itself was totally minging so i cleaned it and FYI a toothpick works so well to get between the nooks n crannies in the letters
I got the ol' wire brush drill attachment out...
...then sanded the surface down and then hit it with some fresh primer and sort of half way up on the inner wing where there was also rust.
Then some lovely paint which is a cracking match
Between coats i kept myself busy in the engine bay and started getting rid of extra grime that was preventing the engine looking even cleaner!
Engine before
And how it is just now. It's not perfect but i've definitely managed to get the worst off and it's looking more presentable! Ideally i need to take the headlights and things out to get in and around all the other bits i want to get at too, along with the air intake to get to the bulk head for a clean and whatever i can't get at behind all that plastic! I've still not tackled the alternator either which could do with a clean and i'll see how the metal takes to some light sanding
Tomorrow will involve bits as said above and taking all the masking away to hopefully see a nice blend of old and new paint. There seemed to be an un-noticeable difference when dry!? but no doubt when i remove everything it'll be a different story! :)) The good thing about that area is that the battery and power steering reservoir hide loads anyway
That's all for now...my back's knackered!
#44: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Apr 14, 2010 4:35 am ---- Well it's dried up and looks a treat, i'm very happy with the paint match it couldn't have been more spot on! Makes life easier.
Just need to hook everything back up and continue cleaning and continue polishing.
#45: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Dillon, Location: KentPosted: Wed Apr 14, 2010 6:59 am ---- Another bit sorted will be a minter once your done, why did you go to pug for those trim piece's your attempt was so much better. did you apply rust preventer to the battery tray? not short cutting are you
#46: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: EdCherry, Location: WiltshirePosted: Wed Apr 14, 2010 7:02 am ---- Why didn't you unbolt the battery tray its a 2 minute job :$
#47: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Apr 14, 2010 1:25 pm ---- Dill there's some KUrust under the primer
ED - no idea! I had other bits on the inner wings to spray anyway. TBH i didn't realise that it was just those 2 bolts, I thought there was more to it than that.
I'm not good in engine bays but i can make them look nice
Today i switched over the little covers on the fog lights from the miami to the goodwood to freshen up the front end. Didn't bother changing the whole lot as the little connectors are such a fiddle!
Before
After
I probably won't keep them on permanently, it's purely for showing purposes this summer and when the miami get's to a pristine state it will get them back!
I inspected that spare wheel which looked great at first bit it was even more corroded in the middle than the others! Looked promising too from this picture.
A few pics of the under-side's condition whilst i was under there
Then i knitted a jumper for her ....
...so i could freshen up the tow bar. You can sort of see how it used to look before.
And now
I also started doing the works on the wiper arms. One was badly chipped on the front and they generally looked a little tired. So for all the time it took to do on the Miami i thought this deserves a treat too. Freshens things up a bit so it does. The wee bracket is for the power steering reservoir which was starting to rust and has been KUrusted and is now in primer as below.
#50: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Thu Apr 15, 2010 6:12 pm ---- haha... Nah...it was used to put on the ground when we painted the fence so it was an ideal thing to cover everything instead of using paper!
#51: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Howey, Location: Kings LynnPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2010 6:55 pm ---- Looking good Brian! Wish I had the money for a project
Well i've been saving to get the door and all the other bits fixed since around november so it's taken time from that point of view. Everything else has been little cheap things. eg the painting i've been doing, side strips are cheap second hand ( 25 delivered roughly!) the vinyl was £8, rear lights were £20. So I try and save money where possible and generally parts for these old Peugeot's are cheap hence why they are so popular as projects. Because of the polished lip i think a refurb on the wheels will be upwards of £250 which I won't be doing just now but the 100% free refurb on them has certainly prettied them up for now. I already had sandpaper lying around so the job was a go-er!
#53: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:44 pm ---- That's her away to ecosse! Hopefully should be getting some progress pics from them as and when it happens
#54: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Thu Apr 22, 2010 4:56 am ---- An awesome parcel arrived from Germany today!
#55: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 9:56 am ---- Had a meeting today and we went to show a guy where Ecosse lived! Low and behold it was open for a rolling road day so i went in for a peek at my car and took a few pictures!
The bonnet's done.
The spoiler's done.
And here's a few others showing how it is to date. A lot more filler than i thought but some of them are the smallest of dents! example the one on the boot lid was hardly noticeable but at least it will look spot on. I am very happy with the progress so far. They only started things late on Tuesday!
The original doors dents were popped out and filled as the door i bought had a new skin on it which was rusty underneath! So that was that!
The roof had a few very deep scratches and dents.
#56: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Alan, Location: StrathclydePosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:07 am ---- Looks good mate!
#57: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Howey, Location: Kings LynnPosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:11 am ---- Very good progress there buddy!
Georgie and I now have our on retro pug project and are taking a leaf outta your book when it comes to affordable quality and strictly OEM!
#58: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: wagsy206, Location: Coatbridge, LanarkshirePosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 10:16 am ---- how much is that setting you back then brian?? i remember you saying it would be either a full body shot or just those panels.
Georgie and I now have our on retro pug project and are taking a leaf outta your book when it comes to affordable quality and strictly OEM!
Cheers! It's a nice wee car that you've got there, a lot of potential. If you're going oem though you will need those pepperpots! Cheaper tyres! I know of a guy who has LOADS of them and probably just wants rid of them from the way he's talking.
Affordability and OEM can go hand in hand if you play your cards right although you might find that you're a lot pickier about things just like i have!
It's getting a full re-spray wagsy. It was working out to be a very expensive bill for all the little things i wanted done and it was only for 2 sides of the car and the spoiler minus a bit on a door and the front driver's wing. Although the paint was in pretty good nick, the colour match might have been fine but a lot of the surface is very orange peeled and it would be too much faffing about trying to blend it in, OR it could have been re-sprayed to match the orange peel which would have looked GASH and it's not what i'd have wanted at all.
So, in short it wasn't working out to cost THAT much extra to get the whole car done ie...roof (a few deep scratches as mentioned), the bonnet (stone chipped and slight dent) boot lid, wing and the whole of the driver's door done. So i thought i might as well get it done right and i'm hoping it will look so much better for it!
#60: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: MartyParty, Location: Newcastle Upon TynePosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 4:17 pm ---- Does a 309 interior fit into a 206?
It won't be a straight fit if thats what your hoping for...and 309 interiors aint exactly plentiful...
#62: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: MartyParty, Location: Newcastle Upon TynePosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 4:25 pm ---- Any idea what I'd need to make them fit?
#64: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Dillon, Location: KentPosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 4:36 pm ---- OMG B. thats a little more than i was expecting you to do to it ! I thought it looked good before it went in. This is going to end up being a labour of love your going to find it hard to get this exactly as you want it now nothing will be too good for it Can't wait to actually see this in the flesh.
#65: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: MartyParty, Location: Newcastle Upon TynePosted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 4:37 pm ---- No probs. Cheers G.
OMG B. thats a little more than i was expecting you to do to it...
You and me both Dill It should make a world of difference getting the whole thing done. I'd be gutted if all the paint didn't QUITE look right or if i could tell what was new compared to the old paint and the scratches on the roof would still be there...blah blah blah! A freshen up will do the job
Marty - you would need to weld in new brackets under the carpet, however if the rails are wider than the standard 206 ones you might struggle, if they're narrower it would be a little bit easier.
These interiors are not easy to come by. Expect to pay circa £350 for a full set in half decent condition. Even still you'd only be able to fit the 2 front seats if any at all. The doorcards, and rear seats are a no go.
#67: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon Apr 26, 2010 11:55 am ---- Low and behold, Greg was sending me pictures today anyway of the progress! So here's a few more. I never saw the grille yesterday so that might have been a job for today.
A better one of the door.
Bonnet all primed.
Spoiler - quite smart pictures i thought lol.
and the grille. This is looking great - it was covered in stone chips as you could imagine.
So...I'll be the one driving down to Pugfest/FCS with clingfilm and bubble wrap on the car
#68: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Mikey2uk, Location: StevenagePosted: Mon Apr 26, 2010 12:12 pm ---- You bringing the 309 to FCS, cant waitto have a close up look B she will be looking a minter soon
#69: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon Apr 26, 2010 12:46 pm ---- Cheers Mikey! Yeah she's going to FCS, I think i'll get it back next week some time at this rate!
#70: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed May 05, 2010 4:14 pm ---- She's back from Ecosse and looking pretty shexy! The chrome side trim i did has been fitted and the front bumper trims have also been fitted. I just need to get the rear ones now pronto as they are really standing out with the rest looking pretty fresh. I just need to sort the front and rear bumpers as they've lost their shine. They were going to do them but i said no...i'll use my own gid stuff and build it up. I'm going to be giving the bumpers/trim a good clean anyway so it wasn't worth while them doing the job as i'd just be removing whatever product they put on!
Here it goes...
First and foremost, the dent in the door is well and truely GONE.
Zoomed along the side of the car a bit...
and zoomed out more
Spoiler's not scratched to bits any more
Roof isn't scratched to bits any more
Some of the trim

#77: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Thu May 06, 2010 10:13 am ---- Cheers Uz Still a few bits to do on the outside like the rear chrome trim which i'm due a phone call for tomorrow. I started re-fitting the original stereo connector today which is fiddley but i think i've just about figured it out! Then i can get on with re-fitting the rest of the goodies! Besides that i'm just after a cam belt change then after that i'll just be cleaning the car to bits up until FCS.
#78: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Mikey2uk, Location: StevenagePosted: Thu May 06, 2010 12:15 pm ---- Looking very good Brian cant wait to have a closer look a FCS

Looking very good Brian cant wait to have a closer look a FCS
Bash on guys...that's what the car's going for...for people to have a nosey!
Cheers for the kind words
I absolutely can't wait to get the audio gear installed and working
#83: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Fri May 07, 2010 9:51 am ---- Well i THINK i have all the wiring sorted.
It switches on but i still need to get myself a code to actually get the thing to work.
I took a break half way through my stint to polish the centre of the steering wheel
I've also started to route the cd changer controller up near the steering wheel which has involved removing the plastic bit that the ECU is connected to and removing the ecu screws to feed the cd changer controller through. I just need to screw it all back together, tidy the wires up and stick the side panel on and i should be nearly there...then onto drilling the holes for the CD changer and finding a way to plug up the old ones!
#84: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Kencoboy, Location: Pembrokeshire, WalesPosted: Sat May 08, 2010 5:00 am ---- Hats off to you B tis car looks awesome have you got much left to do on her now?
#85: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon May 10, 2010 8:38 am ---- Cheers Not loads left to do as such but just going to be a pain to round things up:
Finish installing head unit, cd changer controller etc and get a code for the head unit.
Install CD changer and plug off the old changer holes some how.
Chase up Peugeot for the 3rd time to get rear bumper moldings
Need to go back to Ecosse to get the black vinyls on the verticals of the doors which are NLA from peugeot so an aftermarket solution is required
Might still get cam belt done and the cover put back on.
And then i'll be happy for this year.
#86: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: EdCherry, Location: WiltshirePosted: Mon May 10, 2010 8:52 am ---- Do the belt yourself bri, easy peasy just be prepared to get some squashed hands!
#87: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon May 10, 2010 9:18 am ---- I dunno how confident I am at doing so though Ed and as you say, it is quite a squeeze, although probably a lot harder in a 205. I sort of want a receipt as well to add to the history of the car. I've been quoted around £150-ish to have it done including the water pump, so it's not too bad.
#88: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: EdCherry, Location: WiltshirePosted: Mon May 10, 2010 9:21 am ---- Nah not bad at all really.
We did alot of maintence and service items one of the cars where the parts almost came to £150.
#89: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon May 10, 2010 11:14 am ---- Did a little bit more today. First thing was first...err put the car back together!
What i was doing here was removing the ECU holder and I unscrewed the ECU itself so i could get the cd changer controller through the gap as it's all wired up together, so i couldn't just pop the wire through and attach it afterwards which was a pain. Anyway it went through the hole fine.
I then tidied up all the wiring, put a velcro coin on the back of the changer controller and the other half on the dash so that i can hide it when need be on that little shelf under the steering wheel and attach it to the velco when i need it. I put the side panel back on and it's all turned out to look a bit like this.
Voila... now just to fit the CD changer, get a code for the stereo and hopefully it should all work!
#90: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Lecktorious, Location: ScotlandPosted: Mon May 10, 2010 11:16 am ---- There was a thread on stereo codes the other day and how to get the code, might be worth a search.
#91: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: 206T16, Posted: Tue May 11, 2010 1:29 am ---- Fair play to you mate for putting in all this effort, the car looks mint.
You'll know yourself what it's like when you stand back and you're beginning to feel happier about how the car looks. This was a mint car when i bought it, i've just went a tad OTT but it's made a big difference i have to say.
#93: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon Jun 07, 2010 12:23 pm ---- Well i had a wee day off today!
I finally fitted a plastic cam belt cover!
I then set about cleaning the arches and i was also going to drill holes in the arch to take the new cd changer but it started raining so i only managed to clean one arch and the changer is still in its box
Still! It's good progress and it's looking muchos better!
Cheers
#94: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Dillon, Location: KentPosted: Mon Jun 07, 2010 3:46 pm ---- Looking good B. really getting into all the nooks and crannies with this one! this car is going to be a show winner very shortly a real enthusiasts car
#95: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: 206T16, Posted: Tue Jun 08, 2010 1:37 am ---- Glad you finally got time to get stuff sorted mate lol, are you nearly set for FCS now then?
#96: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Tue Jun 08, 2010 5:41 am ---- Oh i hoovered the interior yesterday too so it's looking better.
But nope, not finished! Still need to:
- Do something with the leather. What though i don't know as my leather care colour restoring balm was a waste of money - it's actually made it lighter so i'll need to scrub it off with leather cleaner.
- Clean the other 3 arches
- Fit CD changer
- Spruce up engine bay
- Polish and wax it (i might need to do some of this in the lock-up with this weather, even though it's a bit tight for space in there)
- See if i can hide the corrosion with chrome vinyl and fathom out whether it would look crap or not!
- Check oil and top it up or i'll do a full change if i find the time/weather/sump plug key!
- Make my stone chip mask for the bonnet.
Other things i want to do but i'll do for pugfest hopefully
- Spray the rear disc protectors silver
- Mix up some zinc-coloured paint for the calipers.
- Paint the accelerator pedal black again, which was a good suggestion by stufarri on PSOOC! I have paint lying around to do this i think anyway
I'll always find something to do...
#97: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: oowilloo, Location: ShropshirePosted: Tue Jun 08, 2010 6:28 am ---- brian i love this car! fair play to you mate your doing a cracking job at restoring this back to its beautiful self!
Unfortunately no more work got done today due to crappy weather and i got called in for more overtime today after being told i was 5-8 i got 2hrs notice to do 2.30-8. MINCE. I might have to clean the arches in the rain with a big jacket on!
#99: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Tue Jun 22, 2010 4:04 pm ---- Well the CD changer is now in!
Well stufarri's suggestions on PSOOC got out of hand! Painting the calipers and the disc protectors made the rest look a bit naff so for a few quid extra and some extra time i painted the more visible suspension parts. Whilst de-greasing/de-rusting and kurusting the suspension components i also managed to clean up the handbrake cable components, and i lightly sanded the brake lines to bring back the lovely copper gleam! The calipers themselves - ie the the bit that's shown silver and not the pad holders - have not been painted at all and have just been degreased using Bilt Hamber Surfex HD which brought them back to silver again which made things easier in that area
Here are the results.
Yes mixing up the zinc-effect paint using hammerite paint was a horrendous job, but soooooo worth it! Also i realise I am missing a disc protector, this is because it's still in the garage as it's needing a rub down because the paint ran and it takes forever to dry hard so i've not been able to rub it down, re-spray and fit it.
Tomorrow morning (if i get up in plenty of time before work) I will sand down the driver's side disc protector, re-spray it, wait till it's touch dry and fit it. Stick the wheels back on and remove the front wheels. Degrease the calipers etc etc and paint them. I can't remember what it's like behind there so i'll be sure to take some before and after pics. I don't think it's too bad at all though
#100: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Tue Jun 29, 2010 4:22 pm ---- I got started on the front arch areas tonight...
When i started:
After a good de-grease/clean!
And some paint here and there...
I don't really know if i want to paint anything else in this area really, So i might just do the lower side of the spring holder as you can see it if you get on your knee's and look about! So just that and maybe one or two wee other bits but for now i think it's fine with just the bits shown painted up
#101: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 5:38 pm ---- I couldn't help myself could I....
Painted: Spring seat in black and the spring itself in a colour i created by accident but thought it looked nicer than painting the spring black too.
I also gave the other metal pieces that you can't really see a very light coat of black just to freshen things up and to make the rest of the stuff look less crappy against what has actually been intended to be painted!
Does look fresher though

Silver Calipers FTFW!!!!!
#103: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Howey, Location: Kings LynnPosted: Thu Jul 01, 2010 4:49 am ---- Looks absolutley spot on mate! Just for the love of god get rid of that half a sticker on your shock! Its annoying me sat here!
Cheers dave but...silver mixed with gold for the even better win as it mimics new calipers' zinc coating when they're new
I was torn between the sticker, there's actually more to it because it's the original shockie i think as it still had a very old peugeot bar code and feint part number on it. So i took the sticker off so that when i go OTT one day, i can get all the wee bar codes n what not. People stick them on the calipers and it looks pretty cool if you like that type of thing

#107: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Fri Jul 02, 2010 9:48 am ---- Painting is finished Unfortunately i wouldn't have had time to do this properly as i'm working this evening. I just made sure the area was well masked (tin foil was a brilliant choice in some areas) and sprayed what i could! It looks miles better though. The tip at the very least needed a good freshen up.

what did you use on the exhaust? looks factory fresh now
Well there's 4 different classes! Concours standard and modified, show and shine standard and modified, so show and shine standard winner was a very mint CTI i think it was green? Not henry yorkes but a bit like it. The guy that won concours had a mint 1.9 205 gti in miami blue i think!
I'm waitin on peeps posting up their pictures so i can point them out to people that ask the same question.
The exhaust is just halfords high temp silver spray paint.
#114: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Dillon, Location: KentPosted: Mon Jul 05, 2010 10:45 am ---- Congrats B. very respectable first outing!! is that just going to have you cleaning and polishing all winter for next year though? howey was right OCD is kicking in!
#115: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Mon Jul 05, 2010 3:45 pm ---- Yup...the project will continue and my OCD is kicking in quite nicely! My next expensive job is to get the wheels done, i'll be getting all 5 done so that the underside looks tidy with a mint spare wheel on it too.
Depending on funds the engine might well be coming out or at least just the inlet manifold and anciliaries so i can paint it the block etc. I'll see how that one goes.
#116: Re: Project 309 GTi Goodwood Author: Brian, Location: VVT Land, FifePosted: Fri Jul 30, 2010 6:48 pm ---- Well i thought i was going to get a few months break with this project but something's cropped up all in one day!
Last week i sent away a front chrome moulding to a certain trim/extrusion manufacturing company. I got a letter today with a sample of what they can offer that is their closest find/match to what the goodwood trim is like and here it is:
It's also bendy and bendy is good! :-B :-bd *anker
An hour later i got a phone call from Mr Peugeot Kirkcaldy: "We've got your rear chrome molding strip here" So i went to collect it with my 10% discount which was put under "309 owners club official" Which was close enough to the real name for me! So anyone in FIFE....go to Kirkcaldy Peugeot garage, you'll get discount!
so i'm in a dilemma. Do i replace the side and rear trim with this replica shizzle or do i hold out for the opposite side in mint condition or better still - brand new!
Likewise I've wondered if it's possibly to use 2 of the same side trims to do both sides? I realise 1 edge is angled but once behind the bumpers and it's all fitted how much of each side is hidden by the bumper itself?? I just wonder if i could get away with it
