#1: Running out of diesel!! Author: ckent80, Location: ChesterfieldPosted: Sat Apr 30, 2011 3:24 am ---- Hi,
I have just purchased my first diesel car! (Peugoet 206 2.0ltr HDI 02 plate).
In previous petrol cars I've had if I ever ran out of petrol I simply put more in and started the car back up!
But I am aware that this isnt as simple in a diesel car, and have been told you must manually pump the diesel through first as not to cause damage to the engine.
I would like to add that at this point I havn't actually ran out of diesel but believe that this is a problem I should research on the "just in case" scenario!
If anyone know whats best to do on this occasion with the above mentioned vehicle then you advice would be gratefully appreciated!
Cheers

Easiest way to check:
Go sit in your car.
Turn your key one click and turn off the radio etc so there is silence.
Turn your key one more click and listen carefully, you will hear it prime

You may get away with it just by turning the engine over, but it will run very lumpy and smoke until all the air is out of the system.
I'm not sure if what Tom has suggested will work as the primeing is just putting the fuel under pressure in the lines. It's getting the fuel to the cylinder that will be the problem.
It is quite a simple problem to solve really. When the needle reaches the eigth mark, go to a garage and put some more in. If you can't afford to keep fuel in your car, then you can't afford to drive it.
#4: Re: Running out of diesel!! Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sat Apr 30, 2011 4:25 am ---- Open the bleed screw on the fuel filter
Turn the key to ignition for about 3 seconds, then off again. Repeat this process about five time till diesel comes out of the drain screw. Then tighten it back up

In regards to the first part, thats what happened to mine. I accidently miscalculated. I cut the car not realising it was as low as it was and wouldn't re-start. Went and got a gallon of fuel and launched it in. Started first time as normal, just gave it a few seconds to prime itself.
Meh. Simply do that last part of Macca's advise. Don't run out!

Good choice as the 2.0 HDI lump is basically bulletproof with only a couple of known issues that PSA Peugeot / Citroen has already fixed with moddified parts.
When the fuel level gets low you will get:
BEEP BEEP BEEP & the yellow low fuel warning light on the instrument cluster will come on & stay on until you add some more fuel, if you have the larger 3 line multifunction diaplay you will also get FUEL LEVEL LOW pop up for a few seconds at the same time.
Do you have trip computer? 2 little arrows on the end of the wiper stalk? if you do you can find out how many miles are left in the tank
If you dont its an easy retrofit

would mine be the same bulletproof engine?
its a 2.0 ltr HDI diesel ( but on a Y plate) 2001
pre-plex though.
i take it the other known issue is the rotting cable running to the fan relay and having to drive around with a non working fan.
#8: Re: Running out of diesel!! Author: Ali_H, Location: Chichester, SussexPosted: Sat Apr 30, 2011 7:21 am ---- I've been driving for 17 years and never run out of fuel, it's something i've never even contemplated.
In terms of "what ifs" it's right at the bottom of the totem pole if you have any common sense.

De rail a bit..
if you have the multi line (plexxed) but don't have the mpg is it possible to fit it?
