#1: Best way to clean coolant reservoir? Author: finners, Location: West Yorkshire PostPosted: Tue May 10, 2011 12:44 pm

Guys,

I noticed that I can hardly see the level of the coolant in my reservoir and was wondering what the best way to clean the reservoir is.

Is it also worth changing the coolant at the same time only I've had the car about 5 years and its never been done?

I did try to find a How to on the forum but couldnt find one (nothing to say there isnt one its probs just me being bad at searching)!!!

cheers

It would have been changed during a full service - tell me its been serviced properly?!

And they're normally quite a dense white colour - I doubt cleaning it would do much good.

tbh mate it's not worth cleaning as its white plastic and is not opaque so you couldn't see the coolant level anyway, i got the same problem and looking to replace with a alloy tank with sight glass but nobody makes them

It last had a proper service at 20,000 and its now on 64,000. I changed the oil, oil filter and air filter last year.

It had new brakes and discs fitted to the front wheels the other week.

I am in the process of doing what I can. I'm going to be changing the plugs and brake fluid myself soon.

Is it worth doing a coolant change then?

Yes, for definite. So its done 44k miles without a proper service?! Assuming it was a full service at 20k. Crikey. Either do a full service yourself or take it somewhere and get a full service.

In all seriousness how do people check their water level? I have a 2.0 engine with the square reservoir as the back of the engine bay. As said above it s white plastic you can't see through. I normally takes me around 10 minutes with a torch wobbling the car like made to try and spot it. There must be an easier way.
Out off all the things this is the most ridiculous thing on my car.

I always put slightly more than the recommended amount of coolant in so when the hose is squeezed you can see the coolant level moving.

i have the same issue but because forge or bailey don't do anything for the 206 we're stuck with it, i sometimes feed something inside to check the level but the nozzle is a weird shape so it is difficult to get an accurate level
