#1: 180 flywheel Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Thu May 12, 2011 9:31 am ---- Car Is in garage getting a new clutch today to stop judder, garage phoned me to tell me my flywheel is warped and a new clutch will be pointless because the 1 in there has only done a fee thousand miles, they quoted me a new flywheel for £500 is there anything else I can do rather than just replace it
Thanks dan

#3: Re: 180 flywheel Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu May 12, 2011 9:38 am ---- yup sorry dude, if the flywheels warped thats whats causing the judder, there's no point getting a new clutch unless you get it fixed
#4: Re: 180 flywheel Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Thu May 12, 2011 9:55 am ---- Just Bern looking on pug1off and they do a lightened flywheel for £325 my question is, can I use 1 with s standard clutch, because there half the price pug want ?
#5: Re: 180 flywheel Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Thu May 12, 2011 9:57 am ---- Just call pug1off and ask them matey, see what they say.
#6: Re: 180 flywheel Author: NICKST, Location: Little hulton (worsley)Posted: Thu May 12, 2011 10:20 am ---- U can also get it skimmed had mine done £50.
#7: Re: 180 flywheel Author: gti180boy, Location: StaffordPosted: Thu May 12, 2011 10:22 am ---- The gti 180 comes with a lightened flywheel standed.
#8: Re: 180 flywheel Author: gti180boy, Location: StaffordPosted: Thu May 12, 2011 10:23 am ----

I was just about to say this lol

is that the reason why it get damage that easily?
#10: Re: 180 flywheel Author: Dan-, Location: BiggleswadePosted: Thu May 12, 2011 10:40 am ---- Pug1off says it'll fit straigh on with a standard clutch, so I may go for that 1, the garage don't really wanna for a skimmed 1 for some reason "/ phoned pug again and they can do the flywheel for £460, which 1 will be better standard or pug1off version
Cheers
#11: Re: 180 flywheel Author: Seabook, Posted: Thu May 12, 2011 11:16 am ---- depends on how light and the craftmanship of the flywheel
#12: Re: 180 flywheel Author: Schumi, Location: Istanbul / TurkeyPosted: Thu May 12, 2011 12:34 pm ---- I only seen one light flywheel for 206gti/gti180. But there is from Japane. Yeah you heard that. Japane. Red Dot Racing IIRC.
What is pug1off offer. Second hand flywheel with custom work or complete new from cnc?

This is a very good question is it brand new or old unit been machined???
I would just go with the standed one as its good as it is but just as seabook has said how light do you wont it?? it will rev faster with lighter but lose torque higher up rev range so i just go standed.
There nufin wrong with skimming flywheels as they only take a little bit off to make it flat which will do no harm at all, as long it dont have any hair line cracks in it.
Mine has slight judder coming and i will be skimming mine

If you want the technical description the inerta of the rotating mass keeps the car smooth on tickover
If the flywheel is lightened too much it may be noticeable if you wanted to sell the car in the future etc.
On the plus side it does give a slight performance gain
#15: Re: 180 flywheel Author: imjeeves, Location: Glasgow / WellingPosted: Thu May 12, 2011 3:05 pm ---- What is the judder that people talk about? My 180 road car when you pull away sometimes feels like there is movement but i cant tell if it is this or possibly just knackered drop links?

It will pick up revs faster but it won't lose torque at any revs. It doesn't make any difference to power outputs.

I disagree with that from what iv seen
#18: Re: 180 flywheel Author: gti180boy, Location: StaffordPosted: Fri May 13, 2011 9:47 am ---- Torque is simply force with a rotational component, for simplicity's sake let's ignore the rotational component for the moment. Force = Mass(M) Acceleration(A) so if you decrease M (mass) and leave A (acceleration)constant then you would lose torque, but a lightened flywheel will accelerate faster than the stock unit so if you should see the same amount of torque.
Where am on about loose torque i mean with a lightened flywheel it has less momentum than the stock unit so it can "transfer" less torque to the drive train in the moment when the clutch engages the flywheel. So you have to give an engine with a lightened flywheel more revs to prevent it from bogging as you let the clutch out than you would an engine with a stock flywheel.
#19: Re: 180 flywheel Author: nido, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Mon Mar 25, 2013 8:47 pm ---- pug1off versions supposed to be machined from solid chunk of steel (billet) and not cast metal... The question (for me) is how hard is it for this flywheel to get 'warped' and start causing vibrations like the standard one I've had in my GTi180 since 2005...
#20: Re: 180 flywheel Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Mon Mar 25, 2013 10:08 pm ---- While you boys are busy talking about torque and wotnot... might I suggest that we spitball some ideas as to how the flywheel warped in the first place such that its doesnt happen again??
A flywheel doesn't "just warp"...
With good OEM clutches, regular servicing of said item and someone who knows how to drive... it shouldn't happen.
#21: Re: 180 flywheel Author: nido, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Tue Mar 26, 2013 5:19 am ---- Good point!..
Indeed a flywheel doesn't just 'warp' but the ones in our GTi 180s are not really designed to last more than our OEM clutches and -for example- parking every day on a highly sloped road in reverse (like I've had to do for the past 8 years) can be quite a 'torture' both for the clutch plate and the flywheel, even though one tries to keep the rpm low enough and the entire process quick enough. If you replace just the clutch when the time comes but leave the same flywheel, it may not be such a wise option (of course that's open for discussion)...

to a point i will agree but looking at the number of 180's that have this problem i would say that there is a fault with the OEM design.
#23: Re: 180 flywheel Author: nido, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Tue Mar 26, 2013 3:16 pm ---- My guess is that it's a normal, cast steel flywheel which has been on a diet (to a point) and that the material used is nothing special.
#24: Re: 180 flywheel Author: Schumi, Location: Istanbul / TurkeyPosted: Thu Mar 28, 2013 3:41 am ---- Me and my friend will bought 3 set of light steel flywheel from TTV Racing.
#25: Re: 180 flywheel Author: Mangie, Posted: Thu Jul 03, 2014 8:28 am ---- Does a warped flywheel make any noise or vibrations that you fel inte the pedal. Does it mather if the clutch is pressed or not?
#26: Re: 180 flywheel Author: paulspug, Location: Spalding lincolnshirePosted: Thu Jul 03, 2014 2:25 pm ---- mine judders all the time from pulling off , just give it some more revs
