#1: HDI Diesel Black Smoke Author: purrjoe, Location: South CoastPosted: Mon May 16, 2011 1:18 pm ---- Wonder if any one could put me on the right track.
My high miler 1.4 HDI runs very well, returning good MPG and burns very little oil.
At the last MOT, when it came to the smoke test, it belched out clouds of black sooty smoke and just about passed at the third attempt.
It has now become worse and I'm fearful it will fail the next MOT.
Is there a usual reason for this ?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

#6: Re: HDI Diesel Black Smoke Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Mon May 16, 2011 2:07 pm ---- You kind of answered your own question. Its a diesel
Or your turbo could be fudged.
...or were you stupid enough to put petrol it it?
#7: Re: HDI Diesel Black Smoke Author: Seabook, Posted: Mon May 16, 2011 2:08 pm ---- clean the air filter, change the oil.
if none of this help then check the turbo.

I go through NI mot. We only do petrol emissions =D
Been through 2 mots with it. You should see some of the cars that pass mot with the reek flying out of them
#10: Re: HDI Diesel Black Smoke Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Mon May 16, 2011 3:03 pm ---- Diesels do a smoke test, but maybe its different in Ireland.
#11: Re: HDI Diesel Black Smoke Author: panason1c, Location: SomersetPosted: Tue May 17, 2011 4:57 am ---- Its normal to push out excess smoke on the first couple of 'blasts' on the throttle if the car has previously been only pottering around and built up a residue of diesel particulates in the exhaust system...........the fact that it passed the mot suggests to me that nothing is wrong with your vehicle.......Another reason for excess smoke is a dirty air filter, have it looked at.
