#1: 206 1.4 sport 55 plate Author: davidt, Location: Leeds PostPosted: Wed May 25, 2011 1:28 am

Morning all
Just bought a 55 plate 1.4 206 which has developed a bit of a problem

Bought a couple of weeks ago and been in the garage since driving it up from Nottingham when it drove OK other than stalling a couple of times when setting off and if not applying plenty of revs. It was just about out of fuel and needed a jerry can top up to get it to go initially.

My daughter passed her test yesterday and took it out for the first time.
The car doesnt drive well at low revs, you have to be very gentle on the throttle to get it to pick up, once above 2000 rpm it goes fine
It is as though you are in the wrong gear, ie, setting off in second or being in third when you should be in second.
If you try to put your foot down at low revs not a lot happens, in fact it makes it worse, if you are light on the throttle it picks up and goes ok once above 2000rpm

Any thoughts?

This sounnds similar to when a car is misfiring, it tends not to pull at low revs at all.
Does it sound like the car is misfiring??

no, no mis fire as far as I can tell.
The best description I can think of is that its like setting off in second gear and being in third when you should be in 2nd

plugs and plug leads?

how do you get at the air filter (even that has me baffled at the minute!!)

Laughing nice try though Smile

On the 1.4 sport, the filter is the long thin black box that runs along the rocker cover on the passenger side. You may have to pull out the air intake (box thing in front of the air filter) to get to all the torx screws though.

Check the plug gaps - or just change the plugs (worth doing if the car is new to you anyway). At lower speeds/wide throttle opening the spark has to jump though a lot of dense air/fuel mixture which is more difficult that less dense air/fuel so wide gaps can show up then.

Could be leads/coil packs - if a lead/coil pack is breaking down the you can get arcing within the lead to complete the circuit. The air around the arc will ionise and help it to sustain the arc (so problem appears to go away as revs increase). Plugs first though.

Unlikely to be air filter - they don't get blocked as such just less efficient - and would affect the car more at higher revs as it drawns more air.

What leads its a 206 they dont have HT leads Wink

Bosch OR genuine Peugeot / Citroen Eyquem spark plugs only! DONT fit NGK plugs to a PSA engine as they are known to cause problems / damage engine ecu's!

Is this a proven fact tho? my GTI had a full service at kwik fit and ngk was fitted

i hear loads of people say ngk will damage the coil pack etc but ive seen a few 206s that have had them in for year without any problems at all

if this is the case ill get mine removed asap
