Heavy steering
-> 206 Problems

#1: Heavy steering Author: karimali831, Location: England PostPosted: Fri May 27, 2011 11:15 am

So I'm insured on a Golf GTI now and couldn't believe the difference in how heavier the steering feels on a Peugeot 206. Turning sharp bends and a turn in the round is much hassle and not very easy... is this with all peugeot 206s' ?

Thanks Smile

Nothing wrong with a bit of weight to the steering it gives more feel.

206 power steering is generally heavier than most other cars i've driven... but i like it, same reason i like my hard suspension, more feeling when you drive! Thumb Up

Dont under stand your question here?

Are you saying the 206 has heavy steering or the Golf? If the Golf how old is it does? Does its have power steering?

The 206 has a nice feedback on the steering I feel but I wouldnt say it was heavy at all. If yours is have you checked you tyre pressures, power steering fluid? If these are low or incorrect they will effect the feeling of the steering.

Well I doubt it's the tyres as I had recent hydraulic inflation on all 4.
I am sure my steering is heavier than it should be.. could anything else contribute to this apart from the power steering fluid and tyres? I'll get this checked.

Thanks for your replies.

Fit the Astra power steering pump....and the 205 reservoir.... cures the problem if you need fast steering

I have left it for a bit but feels like the problem is getting worse, I'm more unable to do parallel parking smoothly and it is a greater hassle now turning with one hand. I want to try avoid getting new pump (unless it's the only way), how can I check the power steering fluid and how is it topped up?

if you need more than one hand to turn the wheel there's definitely wrong lol

Yes I need two hands to turn especially after 45 degrees, more heavier.

Another visit to the garage it is then...

my 180 is heavy compaied to other cars i have had but my little 1.4 hdi is same as any other car think its just a "thing" with the 180's but as said above it does make for good feedback
has the fluid ever been changed ??? you could try that and see if it helps

If only it was that simple. The 206 hardly has the most communicative steering.

What He Said

Peugeot doesnt do communicative steering anymore, everything started to go wrong when they launched the 406.

I still think the 405 if it was still fitted with the original Peugeot shock's was one of the best handling cars of the last 20 / 30 years Cool

Some of the cornering speeds you could get on 3 wheels Thumbs Up

306 / ZX handle really well but im not keen on the passive rear wheel steering.
