#1: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Fri Jun 03, 2011 8:00 am ---- hi all, over the last few months ive had a revving issue on my pug,
2001 1.4 petrol 8v (TU3JP lump) with 24k miles on it
the revs drop very very slowly during gentle driving and "bounce" down to idle after medium / hard acceleration
(you can actually see the engine shake as the revs decrease then increase then decrease as they are returing to idle)
also the revs seem to drop ok untill they reach 2k then they stick and take ages to reach idle
its causing a major problem because when im driving its difficult to change gear, when i clutch up after selecting a gear it drags the revs down (really annoying!)
after advice on here ive had it scanned for codes (none present) and ive taken off and cleaned the entire throttle body (which was in great shape and wasnt really dirty at all), also cleaned the ICV, and when I still had the problem ive replaced the ICV..
all have had no effect on the problem at all
its been to a few garages who say that as no codes are showing they have no idea and I would basically have to start p**sing in the wind and replacing all of the sensors on by one, which i dont really want to do..
if its not the ICV could it be a fueling issue? just a thought? I would imagine that a malfunctioning throtte position sensor would flag up an error code?
anybody got any idea of what else it might be before it goes into peugeot for them to have a look?
other then this revving issue, the car drives great, pulls hard, accelerates well, never misfires etc, also it holds its idle perfectly (just under 1k, once it evenually reaches it lol)
thanks in advance for any help people

2001 with 24K miles in the UK?!
Wow. Please confirm..
#3: Re: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: hobnob48, Posted: Fri Jun 03, 2011 8:43 am ---- Not sure if it could be related but my mate has just done a full service on his vectra and resolved a similar issue. Idle was horrible and the revs were very slow when dropping. Maybe it needs a full service?
He changed:
Water pump, cam belt, oil, oil filer and cam belt tensioners.
Car runs like a dream now. I know your mileage is not very high but it may be worth a shot?
#4: Re: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: Lecktorious, Location: ScotlandPosted: Fri Jun 03, 2011 11:03 am ---- Cambelt should be well overdue a change if not done already.

Yep.
#6: Re: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Fri Jun 03, 2011 1:09 pm ---- Fuel Filter, Air Filter? If either are dirty/blocked, they will be choking the engine?
#7: Re: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Fri Jun 03, 2011 4:07 pm ---- yup 2001 reg with 24k in the uk (has been used by an old lady to go to church on a sunday for years) it was a real bargin
its got new filters and i think its had a belt change but not 100% sure. its high priority but i wanted to get this sorted first because i dont want it causing complications if they mess the timing up etc.

'complications' is a nice way of saying it.
Throttle position potentiometer scanned?
#9: Re: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Sat Jun 04, 2011 2:38 am ---- im not sure what exactly has been scanned, its been code read by 2 garages who could not find any stored, its going to pug on tuesday to be scanned with dealer software so hopefully that will pick something up.
yeh thats my next bet (TPS) but whereas a replacement ICV was £18, a replacement TPS is really expensive! too expensive to gamble on.
diagnostics with pug is £70! daaaaamn lol

18 quid for ICV sounds too cheap, where did you get it and what brand is it?
When I say 'scanned' the TPS, I really mean watching the value (%) go up and down smoothly and within its proper limits. Not an error code as such.
Hope you sort it and let us know for future reference.
Cheers.
#11: Re: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Tue Jun 07, 2011 9:55 am ---- update: the "master fitter" at peugeot has accepted that there is a problem but says that neither him or any other mechanics can figure out why the revs arnt dropping back correctly?!?
they have kept the car overnight to check "parameters" tomorrow?
slowly looking like I might have to put up with this for the rest of the cars life
could a faulty injector cause slow returning to idle???
if peugeot cant figure it out I have no idea how I am suppost too? DAMN lol
#12: Re: Final Advice Before the Stealers Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 9:01 am ---- The dealer phoned me and told me that they had found a solution to the problem!
They then said that I needed to replace the ICV, when I told them again that I had already done that they said they would have to phone me back.
They then rang back and said that 3 mechanics couldn’t find a fault with the car... (Even though a few minutes ago they had a fix for it? and I had previously showed the master fitter in person and he agreed with me there was a problem??)
I went down to the dealership and hit a brick wall with the master fitter, who firstly told me that all Peugeots are designed to hold the revs for a second or 2 at 2,000rpm before dropping to idle and that the stepper motors job was to make the revs drop down slowly in "uneven steps"
(I couldn’t believe what he was saying lol, I’ve driven other 206’s and none of them do this?)
Finally after heated discussion he admitted to me that there was a problem with the revs dropping back and said that he has seen it on a few pugs that come in but has no idea why it happens, he even said in his own words that "if the engine management light isn’t on, it’s pointless booking it in because we won’t be able to determine a problem without a trouble code and you will be charged the full diagnostic fee regardless"
I asked to speak to the service manager who was far nicer, he had a go revving the car and acknowledged the problem, he apologised that he couldn’t find the fault and I agreed to pay a minimal fee and take the car away without the problem being diagnosed.
I have to say it was nice to meet a manager who is willing to compromise and seems to be understanding, I respect the fact that he listened to me and was willing to come to an agreement, it’s a shame that the mechanics and reception staff didn’t have the same attitude...
Oh well, the problem is annoying but I guess il just have to live with it for now
