#1: Bigger Wheels = Loss of Speed??? Author: willb101, Location: nottsPosted: Tue Jun 07, 2011 6:46 am ---- Hi
Sticking some Vortexs on my 1.4 8v in the next couple of days but it came with 14" steelies and when i last had 17's on it sloooooowed it down loads. So ive heard your meant to have some sort of alteration on the gearbox to stop this happening when get bigger wheels. is this sort of thing expensive and would it work?
cheers

I doubt anything to do with your gear box will be cheap, I also dont think it would be a simple thing to do.

#4: Re: Bigger Wheels = Loss of Speed??? Author: Lewis, Location: Isle Of WightPosted: Tue Jun 07, 2011 6:56 am ---- wont maker it slower, but it will make its acceleration worse... nothing cheap you can do about it

#9: Re: Bigger Wheels = Loss of Speed??? Author: spud_gti, Location: NottinghamPosted: Tue Jun 07, 2011 7:09 am ---- mod it with a speed stripe for added 0-60 times for 206s fitted with 17s.....
is a gti box the same as a 1.1 box then??

No. Think a 1.4 or 1.6 fits though.
Wouldn't be much point adding a 'bigger' gearbox onto a smaller engined car though, usually the gears are shorter on the smaller engine. Last edited by CD-B3 on Tue Jun 07, 2011 7:12 am; edited 1 time in total

Is that a joke?

Make your gear box work harder but as long as you don't rag your car you should be alright
#14: Re: Bigger Wheels = Loss of Speed??? Author: Seb, Location: Under your bedPosted: Tue Jun 07, 2011 7:16 am ---- It won't accelerate as quick and it will put a little more stress on the gearbox, but not by a huge deal.

Someone told me to 1.4 had shorter ratios than the 1.1.
Bigger wheels higher the gearing. You may have lost some acceleration but gained slightly on top speed.
The only thing you could do is put lower profile tyres on when you go to change it to make the overall size smaller.
