#1: HELPP.. Author: L5_UKS, Location: West MidlandsPosted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 6:01 am ---- Right only picked up my new car yesterday and have the first problem today ha!
Well went to change my wheels over and managed to snap one of the bolt off in the hub. :(, The previous owner also did the same thing so now left with only 2 bolts holding the wheel on
Whats the best way to get the bolts out the hub? heard you can drill them out?
Thanks

#3: Re: HELPP.. Author: roberto.f, Location: Coventry/ManchesterPosted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 6:06 am ---- Could be wrong, but it sounds like they're overtightened, so there isn't much chance of them coming out. Worse case scenario would be a new hub.

And no i didnt buy it from a dealer so cant go back really, Ive heard you can drill them out? or how hard is it to change the hub?, If i can get hold of one for cheap i dont mind doing that.

#7: Re: HELPP.. Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 6:11 am ---- stud extractors are your best bet for DIY
Spray some WD40 over the area and leave to soak in a bit then use the stud extractors

I think you can drill down the middle of the bolt but I would be really carefull, you dont want to go drilling in the thread.
I'd just take it to a garage mate (if you can).

#14: Re: HELPP.. Author: p_anit, Location: BirminghamPosted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 6:35 am ---- Where has the bolt snapped? I had the same issue, but I could get the wheel off. local garage welded a nut to the exposed bolt and were able to take it out. If that makes sense?
#15: Re: HELPP.. Author: Davo_Pug, Location: Wales/BhamPosted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 7:31 am ---- possibly try getting a garage/fabricator to to tap thread the bolt (make a new thread)down the middle of the snapped bolt. Then insert a new smaller bolt to use to unscrew the snapped one...hope that makes sense. I have never tried this on a wheel...but have had it done to other bolts before..i dont see why it wouldnt work as I cant see how what s being held on(wheel) would make a difference to the process.

This is almost the same process as the stud extractor, only you drill the hole. insert the stud extractor (which has corse left hand thread grooves) inside of the hole and as you're screwing it in (left hand thread remember) it grips the stud and unscrews it.
If you insert a smaller bolt, then you need to lock that bolt to the stud somehow otherwise it will just unscrew from the new thread when you turn it anti-clockwise.

Easy enough to change the hub, just getting it loose can be tricky.
#18: Re: HELPP.. Author: bobsparkle, Location: ScotlandPosted: Sat Jun 11, 2011 3:45 pm ---- I had the same problem when i snapped a bolt on my Golf. Managed to get it out pretty easily by taking a chisel to the exposed end where the bolt had broken and slowly tapped it round until it came loose. Worked a treat! I was going to try and get a stud extractor tool but this worked for me.
#19: Re: HELPP.. Author: Seabook, Posted: Sat Jun 11, 2011 3:48 pm ---- front or rear?
#20: Re: HELPP.. Author: L5_UKS, Location: West MidlandsPosted: Sun Jun 12, 2011 9:38 am ---- Yeah i think im gonna give a go at buying a extractor tool, if this doesnt work ill just change the hub, might aswell try the cheaper option first if im lucky it might work :), and its the rear passenger side mate
#21: Re: HELPP.. Author: Davo_Pug, Location: Wales/BhamPosted: Mon Jun 13, 2011 3:28 am ---- might be an idea to have a look and see if it cross threaded as you dont want the same thing happening next time you want to take your wheel off.
#22: Re: HELPP.. Author: L5_UKS, Location: West MidlandsPosted: Wed Jun 15, 2011 10:22 am ---- UPDATE: brought the bolt extractor from machine mart as said by macca1411 and it worked so thanks alot macca1411
