#1: GTi 180 clutch refitting help Author: sri16v, Location: WalesPosted: Mon Jun 20, 2011 3:30 am ---- Right Ive got the box off new clutch in, all ready to go, problem is I cant get the engine and box to line up, Ive had it on and off several times but cant seem to get further than an inch away.
Input shaft is lined up correctly, drivers side driveshaft is going on, just seem to be struggling with the final inch or so, box is back off now on the floor ready for attempt no.2.
Any tips?
My release bearing was in pieces all over the gearbox casing, managed to take a few blades off the pressure plate as well as damage the clutch springs, doh!
Also anyone thinking of doing a 180 clutch DIY, dont bother, what a job just to remove the gearbox, tight is not the word

yep it has the dowels as well as some awkward to get to bell housing bolts, behind the manifold, they were fun to get to.
Im about an inch away from the the dowels going in, going to have another go this afternoon, Im thinking maybe the engine will need to be raised or lowered a bit, currently on chocks of wood, using a jack and manpower to line it up.
I would take the driverside driveshaft out, to make it easier but cant undo the hub bolt as the subframe is down and its too tight too undo even with a jack supporting the hub

#5: Re: GTi 180 clutch refitting help Author: dannyN, Location: medway, kentPosted: Mon Jun 20, 2011 6:06 am ---- I did a clutch a few days ago and was a night mare .. im used to working on jap cars and the pug was a right pain in the a**e .. i couldnt get my drivers side drive shaft out and still had my sub frame on i managed it after two attempts and after crushing my hand but just keep adjusting the engine height and angle and you should be fine Good luck

#7: Re: GTi 180 clutch refitting help Author: sri16v, Location: WalesPosted: Tue Jun 21, 2011 6:55 am ---- managed to get it on after, absolute pain of a job, I think I could do it around 6 hours now I know where everything is, ended up taking the gearbox mount off the gearbox to get a bit more clearance. A bit of pushing with legs and she slid on.
Only problem now is went to top the gearbox oil up and it was leaking out the passenger drive shaft, so going to have to get the driveshaft located properly.
Is there a circlip on the driveshaft or does it just need pushing in a bit further?

just a pice of meatal that kinda looks like a pice of coat hanger wrapped around a groove in the splines.
if you pull the shaft back out get a new seal and change that while the shafts out incase its that whats split and it will save pulling it out again

Sounds like it just needs pushing further in then, might have a go later if I get time.
