I've had 6 206s.

2002 1.1 - Had it until 70k miles. Only needed a clutch change in the time I had it.

2002 GTi 138 - Had from 60k miles to 100k miles. A number of issues, but none with the engine (apart from the rebuild, but that wasn't due to wear & tear)

1999 GTi - 120,000 miles, no service history. Failed MOT for a shot rear axle. Suspension had all sorts of problems so I broke the car.

1999 GTi - 92,000 miles. Head gasket failure.

2001 GTi - 90,000 miles. ICV problem, but ran great.

1998 1.1 - 128,000 miles. ICV problem. No other issues.

My friend's 306 diesel has last up to 190K, now it's dead, But I think it's just something simple like a alternator or something, so it would probably last longer if he bothered to fix it... I'm hoping mine will last up to 140K. That'll do me.

as someone has siad before it depends on how well looked after it is and how willing you are to shell out for new /second hand bits to keep it going, i think the engine block and head will last forever on my car, still pulling as strong as anything but its all the bits around it which need changing, i do drive it quite hard though and do a min of 20k a year

My 1.4 hdi is on 165000ish at the moment, ive owned it a year and since then its had a new starter motor, crank pulley some new belts and just some general engine maintainence. Its been serviced a couple of times and has been well looked after. If your willing to spend money on them they will last.

Theoretically the GTi could last longer than any of the other engines. Its size means it is less stressed than smaller engines and it's no more complicated that any other 16V engine. There's no turbo to break either.

They tend to get serviced more often too but then they also get driven harder.

Thanks everyone, it put my mind at rest. I shall let the car warm up for a few minutes before going on my short journeys from now on Smile

As for diesels, can the 1.9 live as long as the 2.0 hdi?

You hear about volvos that have a million miles on the clock, is the 2.0 hdi a contender? My grandad has one and says it should outlive the bodywork

Are 138s/180 doomed to a short life? As I have heard they are delicate

I'm not sure it's that there delicate, more that most of them live an abused life lol.

fast versions of hot hatch backs tend to unfortunately mostly be owned by the trun the key and rag the hell out of it brigade but if looked after should last just as long as other versions

i always allow mine to get up to normal oil and coolant temps until i rev it over 3000k and always drive easy for the last couple of miles before i switch it off i check the levels weekly and service it with genuine only parts and iv just hit 64k with no faults at all so far (iv had it since it had done 14K)

Really depends on driving style and roads you be driving on. If the roads are bumpy and your going fast then the car will need more repairs etc.

Best post, I'd like to agree with this.
