#1: what does white smoke mean Author: bisphenol-a, Location: AntarcticaPosted: Fri Jun 24, 2011 9:13 am ---- Sent some friends home and they mentioned my car gives out white smoke when I accelerate. Now that they mention it, when it is dark at night I can see the white exhaust smoke when I move off from stationary through the mirrors. Is there anything wrong with my car.

#8: Re: what does white smoke mean Author: bisphenol-a, Location: AntarcticaPosted: Fri Jun 24, 2011 9:21 am ---- Hmm.. I go check it again this time. Take the car for a drive and then pay attention to my exhaust when its warmed up.
On a side note, the mechanic did mention my rocker cover gasket is leaking. Could that be it?
#9: Re: what does white smoke mean Author: ExoVyper, Location: Waiting for the tugboats to push me into port (Whitehaven)Posted: Fri Jun 24, 2011 9:25 am ---- doubt it as it'll probably be leaking onto the engine block.
have you topped up your rad alot recently?
#10: Re: what does white smoke mean Author: bisphenol-a, Location: AntarcticaPosted: Fri Jun 24, 2011 9:33 am ---- Haven't been topping up anything. All fluid levels are fine. Last service done in feb. Temps are always way within normal range. Maybe its not even what we think it is. I should check it out again.

The head gasket is the one that keeps the coolant that surrounds the engine from entering into the cylinder head. When the head gasket is damaged some of the water jacket coolant will flow into the cylinder head and become steam, this steam is the white 'smoke' that you see coming out from the exhaust of your car.
Above text adapted from the net.
Check your coolant level to see if it's going down & your oil filler cap for signs of 'mayonnaiseing' (oil & water mixing), both signs of a knackered head gasket.
Ps- if it's only from cold, it could be the condensation evaporating from inside the exhaust as it warms up.

Check the fluid levels.
Check for mayo / brown sludge under oil filler cap & also in the coolant expansion bottle.
