LED Map Light Stays On
-> 206 Problems

#1: LED Map Light Stays On Author: MrrNoName, Location: UK PostPosted: Tue Jun 28, 2011 6:08 am

Hey all, ive just fitted a LED bulb into my interior (map) light, it works fine except that when its on the door open setting the bulb never goes out completely, it always glows very faintly, even with the key out and the car locked.

Im aware that this happens because LED's use less voltage then standard lamps and that there must be voltage creeping through it even when its off

my questions are this

1. is the LED bulb actually using any more power then a standard bulb would when the circuit is closed and the LED is lit up dimly? (i.e did a standard bulb still have this voltage creeping through it and I just couldnt see it because they take more power before they illuminate? I presume this is the case but am not quite sure)

2. Is it going to flatten my battery lol? you can barely see that its lit, it just glows extremly dimly (you cant see it once the clear/smoked cover is over it)

3. are their any potential problems to having it very, very dimly illuminated constantly.

EDIT: ive jsut found these, that have a higher resistor included within them which should make the LED's act like a regular bulb

Thoughts?

LED's dont need as much power to illuminate, you need to add a resistor

the LED's in the link above have resistors built in specifically to make the LED's seem like regular bulbs (to stop canbus errors etc) I think the in-built resistor will also make them go off when they are ment too lol

Ive got the same problem. Ive had my car stationary for a week with it on faintly and the battery has been fine Smile

Yeah i have an SMD LED in my interior light and it has always done it, i just ignore it, it's not really a problem, and i've never had any starting problems s can't drain the battery Thumb Up

problem sorted, if you purchase "no canbus error" LED's like the ones linked to in my original post they work fine. They already have a resistor built into them so that they act like a regular bulb, my interior light now goes off fully

Are you sure they don't turn off? The Audi has LED's in the side lights and they glow too.. But turn off eventually which we think is a capacitor discharging designed so bulbs never dim in usage.

Nope, they stayed on "for ever" lol
