1.4 hdi whistling

My cars just hit 72000 miles, it has full service history and gets used around town and on long motorway journeys so its hopefully a fairly healthy engine! Only problem is recently when I come off the accelerator above 2000rpm I can hear a whistling noise for about a second - obviously this is the turbo but this sound wasnt happening until about a month ago. Whats the sort of lifespan I should expect from my turbo? Is it likely to be the bearings or a knackered hose? Im always pretty careful with it, i wont take it above 2k until its fully warmed up so I was hoping it cant be anything too terminal Sad

You wont take it above 2k until its fully warmed up? f*** you must take an age to move for the first 10 minutes then.

You probably just didn't notice the whistling, otherwise just check hoses are tight, exhaust isn't blowing excessively. I've had the EGR pipe blow in half at about 105k miles, but you will notice that, hell of a lot louder.

I was going to say check the pipes as even though my car isnt a turbo...or a diesel, I had a leak in my oil breather pipe and it whistled around 2k rpm.

Haha yep, it takes an AGE to get up to temperature as well! Sounds good that its most likely the pipes then, thats much less destructive to my account balance in comparison to getting a new turbo Laughing

Mines on 130k now, 100k of pure pedal to the metal.

Give it a few more revs and dont be so 'careful' on warmup, its a road engine its built to be take some abuse. I mean revving it all the way up from cold, yer not a good idea, but even myself will go to 2.4-2.5k. Takes alot less time to get warm, and wont effect things to much.
