#1: randomly loses power then fixes itself ! Author: smallzoo, Location: crewe PostPosted: Tue Jul 12, 2011 9:27 am

new to this forum so don’t really know the etiquette..

Bought a nice 1.4 205 ( 51 plate , 96k ) for my daughters first car. She loves it and is hoping to take her test in the next few months.

As nasa would say.. houston we have a problem !

Everytime we take it out, about once during the drive a strange (unsettling for my daughter) problem occurs :-

When in first and second and generally when moving from a standing or slow start (junction, lights etc) the car just loses power. You can rev the accelerator but as soon as you engage the clutch it just wants to pootle at about 5 miles an hour.. it doesnt stall and if you do something random like change gear, take the foot off the accelerator etc it suddenly comes back to life ??

There is no smoke, bangs, whistles etc and once the car is running again its just fine and dandy.

We took it to our local garage and he said he put it on his diagnostics but came up with nothing

Anybody any clues as she would like to use it for her test but we just cant with this problem

Thanks

I'm not to sure about your problem with the engine, sorry, but make sure you check that it's had all the recalls it's ever needed as I had to run to a pug dealer on a saturday to get a letter saying it's had the brake recall done. This is because they won't let your daughter take her test and fail her. Just a heads up. Hope you get the problem sorted!

Oh just realized it could be your idle control valve, there about 20 quid from a dealer new. I think cleaning them can help though

I'd agree with idle control valve, sounds like its sticking, also check the cable.
Does she or you notice that the pedal gets stuck? or that it doesnt Rev with your foot to the floor, either in gear or out....

Thanks for that.

The pedal doesnt stick at all. Just feels like it does normally, seems to rev ok but just no power.. could this still be the idle control valve ?

Quick question , is fitting the idle control valve a simple diy job or needs a decent mechanic ?

It's a simple job to replace. Search it in google and you'll see streams of forums with problems and also pictures of it. They can be cleaned to check it's that. But if cleaning the plunger works I'd replace it anyway. But could be a loose connection.

Had a chat with the local garage and they said the idle valve wouldnt make any difference a the problem doesnt effect the idling speed, even when it loses power you can rev the car ok,, its just like power has just gone.. and then appears again !

Or she has her foot on the clutch pedal slightly.

Is it hydro clutch??? could need draining...

Re-read the OP's post. It's only when pulling away and they dip the clutch.

ICV gets my vote, the issue is at idle when the OP engages the clutch.

the drive of the car and the idle control valve are completely unrelated. if they were dropping the clutch and the car was going down past idle and cutting out then it might be the valve but it wouldnt affect the car by making it lose power..

it sounds to me like your clutch needs looking at. all of the symtoms you are experiencing are clutch related and they happen when something to do with the clutch is pressed/engaged/disengaged.

everybody always blames stuff on the idle control valve on this forum, im not sure why, the idle control valve is no longer in use as soon as your foot is on the accelerator so therefore it has no relevance to a car losing power..

Nice to have a debate.. can I clarify a few things..

-it happens when I drive as well ( I have had 33 cars so far ! ) so it NOT related to a driving style.
-I dont think its the idle control either but I am not convinced its clutch either.. why would moving off in first gear or moving slowly in 2nd gear and no power be related to clutch ?. The clutch is engaged, it just has NO power. If you change gear, or put it into neutral OR wait a while the power comes back. There is no problems engaging any gears, clutch judder or anything similar. Except for these incidents it goes really well through the gears at all times.

Thanks

clutches arnt as simple as you think, they are complex and alot of different things can go wrong on them. my sisters fiesta used to lose all power randomly in fifth gear. that turned out to be the clutch.

im not saying it deifnitely is, but dont rule it out Smile
