Sorry for asking for help on my first post, it's for my girlfriend who has a 206 (I have a 172 - I hope that's not a sin on these forums!) and it's been absolutely fautless.
It's a 2002 with only 50k miles on it, 1.4 LX.
This morning she pulled out of the bottom of her road and the engine is spluttering and dying... it's not actually stalling, just not revving. The relay's were also clicking. (this is a more "polished" diagnosis than the one she gave to me at 8.30am whilst I was on my way down the A3 to see a client!)
So she gave it to her neighbour who is a semi-retired Renault / MB mechanic with all the diagnostics equipment and got the bus to work.
He's spent 4 hours checking all relay's. sensors (crank, throttle, MAP etc) and they're all fine. There's no fault codes what so ever.
His final diagnosis is that it's the ECU that is at fault.
Now the car is a bit battered (it was her first car and she's had it for 4 years... do the math!!!) but it was mechanically spot on and has been 100% reliable, so I always stand up for the little Frenchy when others say they crap!! So it's worth circa £1k. A new ECU is probably going to come close if not dwarf what the car is actually worth and luckily she's in a position where we were looking for a new car for her and the value of the 206 isn't important so we could scrap it.
However, I feel it's probably worth changing a sensor or 2 to see what happens.
Does this sort of problem trigger something in someone's mind who could point me in the right direction!? I don't want to spend north of a few hundred quid on it as it's not worth it if she's going to p/x it in a month anyway.
Any help or advice would be most appreciated!!!

Author: SteveS, Location: DorkingPosted: Wed Jul 20, 2011 1:43 pm ---- I should also add, I've had a play with it, if you feather the throttle you can get the revs to circa 3000rpm before it starts to die... if you floor it from idle it will try to die immediately.
It starts fine and idles fine.
I've searched the whole web / forum and I do not think this is that common random 206 cutting out issue!!! (TBH, I had no idea such a problem existed!).
As I say, her car has been fautless, serviced / maintained perfectly since she's had it and is very low mileage and given a very easy life (bar a few painted plastic items around the body!).

When was the cambelt changed?
Possibly slipped a tooth

Hi mate,
How did you get your ECU sorted for £100!?
She has no idea about the cam belt... I'm presuming it has but you may have hit the nail on the head there... I'm presuming that wouldn't throw up a fault and it does seem like the timing it out! Thanks! I'll investigate.

Only fault code it might throw up is the crank/camshaft sensor.
I'd have a strong guess at the timing belt, especially with it dying after 3k. Does it also slightly sound like you have a dump valve when you rev it and release?

How much did you pay to have an ECU coded to your car / keys??

Or if you find a cheap ECU, I'll give you the details of a guy that unlocks them so they are free running, or he'll copy the IMMO coding from your old one if you send him that one too
