#1: oil dipstick Author: 206racer, Location: derbyshirePosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 12:24 am ---- Couldnt find a topic on this problem if there is could someone put a link on.Went to check oil on car and noticed the plastic end had snapped off (must be in pipe or sump)Does it do any harm and how do i get it out? Thanks
#2: Re: oil dipstick Author: E5GDM, Location: EssexPosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 1:00 am ---- Should get away with it, its probably (what's left of it) in the sump by now. Only thing you can try is take the sump off, could be very lucky & it'll come out when you take the sump plug out.

If it has ended up led in the sump. get a powerful magnet and move it around on the outside of the sump, finishing near the sump plug, drop the oil and see if you can get it out. Might need long nosed pliers to reach it.
New dipsticks are only a few quid from dealer (cheaper than the ones on ebay)
#4: Re: oil dipstick Author: 206racer, Location: derbyshirePosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 1:18 am ---- Its booked in for a service next week, will it be ok to run it this week?
using a magnet will be no use as it is the plastic bit that has broken off.

Not sure if there is a strainer gauze over the pick up pipe in the sump. If there is then it will be held in the oil somewhere down there, if not it could be trapped in the oil filter. Just keep an eye on your oil pressure and temp to make sure there are no big changes.

#7: Re: oil dipstick Author: bashyy1, Location: Milton KeynesPosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 3:11 am ---- Happened to my old 1.4... Infact i bought another from the dealer and it snapped again after 2 weeks...there are a terrible design! :@ Didn't do any harm for me either tho.
#8: Re: oil dipstick Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 4:24 am ---- There is a strainer on the oil pick up pipe so it won't go anywhere. Although if it's plastic will it float? It might come out of facing the right direction when the oil is emptied.
#9: Re: oil dipstick Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 5:17 am ---- Common problem on the TU lumps with the plastic tip'd dipstick.
It will be fine, won't cause any engine damage

#12: Re: oil dipstick Author: 206racer, Location: derbyshirePosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 10:28 am ---- Thanks for the feed back will see if it comes out when they change the oil.I have bought a new dipstick and had no problems with it sliding in,so i suppose it must be in the sump somewhere. The piece of plastic looks like could be 1.5 inches long.
#13: Re: oil dipstick Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sat Jul 30, 2011 10:30 am ---- Leave the old dipstick in, and keep the new one in the boot
