#1: Sqeak when releasing handbrake? Author: Ste, Location: Hull -or- The World Of Info Code PostPosted: Tue Aug 02, 2011 11:01 am

Wow it's been a while since I've had to post in the problems section lol!

But hey ho here we are again, oh how I've missed you '206 Problems' NAWTTTTTTTT!

Anyway, just wondering if anyone can help me and my wee puggy, for about 3-4 weeks now, everytime I've released my handbrake there has been a strange sqeak noise, and when I say everytime I liturally mean everytime, unless I take the handbrake off sloooowwwwwwllllllyyyyyy, which is boring and gay.

Recently it's also been happening when I also release the foot brake, not so often, but on occasion.

I've been under the car and with the help of a helper moving the handbrake up and down I've tried to locate the nosie, but the most I can say is it's in the middle to rear area of the car and not specificly louder at either side.

I've lifted the handbrake cover off the inside, had a poke around, and the noise is definatly from the underside of the car.

I did think it could just be part of the cable squeeking as it moves but would it still do that if I was using the foot brake too?! (Might be a dumb question but idk?) I'd assume the handbrake cable was seperate from the footbrake's workings.

Another thing that came into my head was could it be the return springs that pull the pads back away from the drum? But then the noise *sounds* like it's coming more from the middle of the car and not a specific drum..

Any thoughts or help much appriciated!

Sorry for the long post but the more information the better diagnostic and all that Wink

P.S. Other than the noise it's causing no other effects on the car stopping or holding itself in place, it's just hella annoying!

Handbrake is cable and foot brake is fluid mate Laughing

Does the brake pedal noise come from the same place or the actual pedal itself?

like you said it will probs be that the pad isnt fully detatching from the drum when you release it, its almost impossible to find out where those squeels are comming from so it could be from either side. when you pull away for a few seconds the shoe is still slightly rubbing

Thought that Lee, hence - I'd assume the handbrake cable was seperate from the footbrake's workings. Laughing

Comes from the exact same place mate, and obviously doesnt do it when the handbrake is on, which leans me more towards the return springs, as the pads will already be pushed into the contact posiiton?

But then it doesnt do it as often with the foot brake? I'm a confused cookie!

Nope, it's not that, it does it at a standstill.. As in, It's currently sat on the drive, wheels chocked so it cant move anywhere at all, everytime you release the handbrake it squeeks..

I'll go gets a video-ma-bob, might make it easier for people to help me then too Very Happy

Can't you manually put the handbrake on and off on each wheel like you can with a disc brake one? Where the end of the cable joins the brake. If you manually do it then you'll be able to see which brake its coming from

I'll have a check tomorrow Smile

If it's the springs that pull the shoes back would it be a replace jobby?

They are pretty easy to change I think. Just make sure you follow the right guide for Bosch or Lucas as they are different layouts

I did my rear shoes a couple of weeks ago, piece of ..... if you have even the slightest mechanical knowledge.
Buy new hub nuts though as they shouldn't be used twice.
You can buy a spring kit but might just be the pivot point where the handbrake moves on the shoes.

Nearside

These might help if you get stuck. Mine are Bosch drums and shoes.
