#1: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: tim30485, Location: LeicesterPosted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:17 am ---- hi,
im having major issues, on idle the engine looks like its got the shakes and its a little loud sounding with the wapping, ive just recently done a full service too.
i had a diagnostic done which was a waste of time because he said there are no faults and no em light but he thinks it could be two of the injectors (i already said i think its an injector issue before i took it in anyway) so i was no better off after this.
i've tried disconnecting the power connector to each injector one at a time but the engine still sounds the same, no difference in noise/shake factor, so logically this tells me that the injectors may not be at fault? next question is if thats the case what else could it be thats causing the misfire, oh and it also cuts out at times and struggles on cold starts too.
oh the car is a 1.4 hdi (8hz)
massive thanks in advance for any help
tim

#4: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: Seabook, Posted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:38 am ---- you can identify misfire cylinder bu a simple water spray test.
misfire cylinder will stay cooler than the others so it will take longer time to evaporate the water
#5: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: tim30485, Location: LeicesterPosted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:40 am ---- i've just realised where the manifold is bolted to the head there appears to oily residue, would this maybe suggest a cracked manifold and its blowing or a replacement gasket?

how do i do this?
#7: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: Abzynthe, Posted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:43 am ---- spray water on the manifold, and whichever one takes the longest to evaporate the water is the misfiring cylinder.
#8: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: Antknee, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:46 am ---- thats easier said that done, the whole top of the engine has the intake system bolted to it
#9: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: tim30485, Location: LeicesterPosted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 6:53 am ---- so it all needs to be removed and the same with the rocker cover etc?
#10: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: MrrNoName, Location: UKPosted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:57 am ---- if there is a misfire why hasnt the ECU picked it up and put the EML on? i thought they almost always did with constant misfires?
#11: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: tim30485, Location: LeicesterPosted: Thu Aug 04, 2011 10:23 am ---- thats what i thought :S
#12: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: tim30485, Location: LeicesterPosted: Sat Aug 06, 2011 2:35 pm ---- ive located quite a few sets of injectors on ebay and local scrapyards, but none match my part number, but im reassured by all these sellers/scrapyards that all 1.4 hdi injectors are universal? is this true so it would be a straight swap job?
#13: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: Seabook, Posted: Sat Aug 06, 2011 2:41 pm ---- i would be very suprise if the injector is at fault
diesel injector is very reliable
#14: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: tim30485, Location: LeicesterPosted: Sat Aug 06, 2011 2:51 pm ---- what else could cause this? ive done the screwdriver handle test to check for the rhythm of the tapping (showing the solenoids are working properly) but they all sound different so im not sure...
#15: Re: 1.4 hdi misfire/engine shake Author: Seabook, Posted: Sat Aug 06, 2011 3:03 pm ---- lost of compression will cause misfire too.
if you really believe is the injector issue you can always get it check first, any diesel specialsit can do that. will cost less than 20 quid per set and if they are at fault, they can also re-con it for you.
