Pre = before = before multiplexing...

Pre-plexed is 2001 and before, it means that the wiring is simpler and you do not have to follow the precautions of shutting the BSI down etc, as it doesnt really have one. It also means that you have seperate control stalks instead of a com2000 unit.

Multiplexed uses less wiring but its wired more complicated (correct me if im wrong). You have to corectly "put the car to sleep" before disconnecting the battery. Thats the basic jist of it lol.

you can tell if you car is pre or multiplexed by the stereo control stalk next to the steering wheel, long and thin is pre, short and fat is multiplexed.
