#1: High emissions / overheating Author: az87aris, Location: Doncaster UKPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 9:16 am ---- Hi all, in need of a little advice please!
My car failed it's MOT a few weeks back for a number of things which have all been fixed.
One of the main reasons for failing was the car was starting to overheat which failed the emissions part of the test.
I have since had the lambda sensor replaced (new), the cat replaced (new) and a replacement radiator fan fitted (used, working). I have just taken it back for a free retest and again it has failed due to high emissions/overheating, to the point where the test had to be stopped as it was 'going into the red'.
Other than the things that have already been fixed, what could be causing the high emissions/overheating, I'm stumped!
They said the fan wasn't kicking in at all so could be faulty wiring or resistor but they guy who installed it said it was 100% working after he fitted it, and considering I didn't pay for the work (family friend) he has no reason to lie!
The guy who I had fixing the car is also stumped as when he was fixing it/just after he has fixed it he said it was it was running fine and couldn't understand why it would still be having this problem.
The only thing I can think of is the MOT station could be trying it on for the cost of repairs, they said they didn't know what could be causing it and it would be £50 an hour while finding the problem plus the added cost on top for repair / parts!
Any advice would be very appreciated!

if the fan kicks in and it dont over heat go find a new mot station.

Also, check the thermostat is working.
#6: Re: High emissions / overheating Author: Deckchair5, Location: Bath UKPosted: Sat Aug 20, 2011 10:13 am ---- The MOT station won't be trying to rip you off. When the car overheats it often starts to misfire and then your emissions will go off the scale
Lots of things can make your car overheat eg poor water pump impeller, air locks, head gasket, crushed pipes, stuck thermostat but if the fan isn't starting up at all by the time the engine temp gets to 95C then there's your first target as there may be nothing wrong with the car cooling system, it's just there's nothing there to make the fan go when it's required
Have a look at the thread "engine temp just shooting up" and make up an ETS simulator as i showed in there and then you can test your rad fan is working without waiting ages and taking the engine up to dangerously high temps
