#1: 206 GTi "Gearbox" clonking? Author: tubbe2, Location: DenmarkPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 6:19 am ---- Hello!
Searched the forum, and couldn't really find anything about my specific issue.
Whenever I shift/change gears upwards (all gears 1-2-3-4-5), the car makes a clonking noise from the front - also, when I take my foot off the accelerator pedal and press it back down, it also clunks a bit, but not as much though.
To avoid this as much as I can, I have to shift/clutch really slow and as smooth as possible. Really a pain in the a**e, specially with the clutch pedal being tight - it doesn't really glide smooth.
And also to mention - when I shift at high revs, around 4-5000RPM and also accelerating, it doesn't clonk as much/often, funnily enough
It doesn't make any clonking noise when I shift down.
Any help on my issue please? Last edited by tubbe2 on Mon Aug 22, 2011 2:42 pm; edited 2 times in total

Author: tubbe2, Location: DenmarkPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 6:55 am ---- Doesn't matter anyway Just wanted to make it sure, that it's about the 137bhp engine, and not the "180" - as the 2.0 is sometimes also called S16 in the UK, when it's not the GTi 180? So I've read..

I've heard it called the 138 and 140 so your 137 was a new one for me haha.
It sounds like a very similar thing I had on my 180 which I thought was an engine mount but it ended up being front wishbone bush that had degraded.

A worn mount would allow the engine to rock when applying load, it could be hitting something causing the clunking

I don't think the clutch has ever been changed btw (it's rounding 132k km / 82k miles soon), and the previous and only owner of the car was a woman - got a mechanic to take it for a short drive today, and he said it felt like it was the clutch, when engaging the gears. and that would be a quote of around £700 including labour
To get a clutch replaced is about £250 currently, im not sure how would it be the clutch though? maybe get a second opinion before you get it replaced.

Author: tubbe2, Location: DenmarkPosted: Tue Aug 23, 2011 4:44 am ---- Well, a clutch kit costs £190 in Denmark, and the garage takes around £58 per hour (which is kinda cheap here in Denmark, the Peugeot garage takes around £117 per hour) - and he said it would take most of a day
At least - maybe buying a clutch kit in the UK would be smarter/cheaper - if that's the road I'm going down. The cheapest I could find was £98.47 on ebay, with £15 in shipping. Anyone knows where I can get it cheaper? And also maybe uprated, if the price stays under/equal to the Danish price - £190
I will have someone else to look at the engine mounts sometime soon...
#10: Re: 206 GTi "Gearbox" clonking? Author: tubbe2, Location: DenmarkPosted: Tue Sep 27, 2011 12:54 am ---- Please close the topic - problem was related to tired springs/worn out clutch. Clonking disappeared after fitting a new clutch. Still clonks a bit sometimes, but I guess that's an operator error
