#1: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: adsayer, Location: NorthallertonPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 7:23 am ---- I'm sure this must have been posted before but I couldn't see anything relevant during a search.
I'm wanting to remove the steering wheel and replace with a newer one as it's a bit tatty. I was giving myself the heads up with the Haynes and it mentions that the centre console needs removing first?! Apparently to access the Airbag ECU. Now I know the Haynes' can sometimes miss a lot of a process out and other times go through unnecessary procedures... I have it in my mind that removing the centre console seems a longish and unnecessary process.
I had it in my mind that I'd just need to do the following:
1) battery disconnect (in line with BSI shutdown blah blah).
2) remove airbag by undoing the two bolts behind the steering wheel
3) disconnect airbag wiring
4) undo big bolt holding down steering wheel to column.
bosh.
Would appreciate a bit of guidance on this please! thanks!

you need to wedge something like a flat headed screwdriver in behind the wheel and prise off the airbag via the springy clips.

Skard so it's just a case of prising the airbag off by wedging a screw driver in between the wheel and the airbag or actually wedging a screwdriver behind the wheel (as you said above), could just do with clarification on that.

as a precaution, wait 10 mins or so once the battery has been disconnected to allow any power to discharge.

It does as it means you need a CLIP on / multiplexed type steering wheel.
After BSI shut down correctly, slot in bottom spoke on back of wheel, flat blade screwdriver & push upwards to release the airbag clips.

as far as i know, all 1.4 hdi's are multiplexed (october 2001 onwards).

If you take the bolt straight off you could rip the wires out for the airbag.

& break your nose with the steering wheel
Old Vauxhall's used to be the worse & you needed a puller to get the steering wheels off.

My head isn'tsmall enough to look at the back of the wheel lmao...seriously though where are the slots I should be looking for and I need to prise upwards?

Yours will be MULIPLEXED.
No holes in the back of the wheel, the 1 slot you need to look for is on the bottom spoke.
