#1: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: adsayer, Location: NorthallertonPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 7:23 am ---- I'm sure this must have been posted before but I couldn't see anything relevant during a search.
I'm wanting to remove the steering wheel and replace with a newer one as it's a bit tatty. I was giving myself the heads up with the Haynes and it mentions that the centre console needs removing first?! Apparently to access the Airbag ECU. Now I know the Haynes' can sometimes miss a lot of a process out and other times go through unnecessary procedures... I have it in my mind that removing the centre console seems a longish and unnecessary process.
I had it in my mind that I'd just need to do the following:
1) battery disconnect (in line with BSI shutdown blah blah).
2) remove airbag by undoing the two bolts behind the steering wheel
3) disconnect airbag wiring
4) undo big bolt holding down steering wheel to column.
bosh.
Would appreciate a bit of guidance on this please! thanks!

#3: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: skard, Location: UK - NorthPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 7:27 am ---- yes you're steps are correct, other than 2 - you will have a clip on type airbag instead of bolts.
you need to wedge something like a flat headed screwdriver in behind the wheel and prise off the airbag via the springy clips.
#4: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: adsayer, Location: NorthallertonPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 7:32 am ---- Great stuff, thanks guys. Skard so it's just a case of prising the airbag off by wedging a screw driver in between the wheel and the airbag or actually wedging a screwdriver behind the wheel (as you said above), could just do with clarification on that.
ta!
#5: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: skard, Location: UK - NorthPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 7:33 am ---- if you look behind the steering wheel there's two slots, inside each you will see a small metal bar - this has to be prised up to free the airbag.
as a precaution, wait 10 mins or so once the battery has been disconnected to allow any power to discharge.

It does as it means you need a CLIP on / multiplexed type steering wheel.
After BSI shut down correctly, slot in bottom spoke on back of wheel, flat blade screwdriver & push upwards to release the airbag clips.
#9: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: skard, Location: UK - NorthPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 8:14 am ---- nope, you'll have the clips not bolts.
as far as i know, all 1.4 hdi's are multiplexed (october 2001 onwards).
#10: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2011 9:31 am ---- Big tip for removing the steering wheel. undo the bolt half way then pull the steering wheel hard to pop it off then undoo the bolt. If you take the bolt straight off you could rip the wires out for the airbag.

& break your nose with the steering wheel
Old Vauxhall's used to be the worse & you needed a puller to get the steering wheels off.

My head isn'tsmall enough to look at the back of the wheel lmao...seriously though where are the slots I should be looking for and I need to prise upwards?
Cheers

Yours will be MULIPLEXED.
No holes in the back of the wheel, the 1 slot you need to look for is on the bottom spoke.

Just make sure its the correct type fitment for your car
#16: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Fri Oct 07, 2011 8:56 am ---- It will be the later type with clip ? I have seen some before on ebay that have a sprung metal shaped spring type mech you can see with airbag off whereas the older ones have 2 torx bolts holding it on...I think lol

Correct.
#18: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Fri Oct 07, 2011 8:59 am ---- I seen this post on somewhere and kept it, its for 307 that shows 2 springs 1 either side of the wheel www.glodark.com/peugeo...7-horn.htm
#19: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Fri Oct 07, 2011 9:07 am ----
The way the 307 clip on airbag fixes to the steering wheel is different to a 206.
#20: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Fri Oct 07, 2011 9:10 am ---- Thats good to know so the 206 is on the bottom spoke and moves towards the centre to get it off

Yes.
Your first time removing a 206 multiplexed airbag can take a few attempt's to release both clips, once you get some practice in you will be able to pop it of first time everytime.
#22: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Sat Oct 08, 2011 4:46 am ---- Well just bought a 180 GTi steering wheel so gonna be doing the airbag thing soon as it comes, is the main bolt holding the wheel on a torx 50?. Torque setting anyone? Just incase its different for newer models, for some reason Haynes use a lot of the methods for the pre 01 cars in the newer manual. Got a SP lower grill from the same guy"non sport" got both for 85 quid delivered, reasonable I thought but not looking forward to taking the bumper off, I'm a lazy bugger lol.....
#23: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sat Oct 08, 2011 5:00 pm ---- I think its torx 50. No reall need to torque it up just nip it when it goes tight. Its not going to fall off its clicked in place anyway. Driven without the bolt before for a brief period.
Also you don't need to take the bumper off to put the grill in; Jack it up, push the old one through and pull it out. Then put the new one in place and put the clips of from underneath its faster than taking the bumper off.
#24: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Sat Oct 08, 2011 5:20 pm ---- Thats brilliant news wasn't looking forward to taking the bumper off at all, I'd end up cleaning it then having to wash the whole thing lol!!!!!
#25: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sat Oct 08, 2011 5:24 pm ---- You may find it harder or easier than me as I have a sports bumper. The clips are a bit sharp on the fingers sometimes. If you can't get some of them on just open them up slightly with a screwdriver.
#26: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Sat Oct 08, 2011 5:25 pm ---- Having a perfectly clean straight motor is just a pain you notice every wee ding, scratch and imperfection. I've been there it ain't nice, I can park as near to the supermarket door as I want without worrying about "who the f**k done that" and just having a bad day from then on in....Used is good.
#27: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: lmilligan, Location: HertfordshirePosted: Sat Oct 15, 2011 5:55 am ---- Just got my gti wheel and pushed the bottom clip in and released the top clip, Do I have to prize this ine up aswell? I just tried and it moves and doesn't do anything
#28: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Sat Oct 15, 2011 7:33 am ---- When I first tried to get it off only the top LHS popped out I just kept putting it back in till they both popped out, use a big flat driver that will fit in the hole and press it upwards towards the centre of the wheel not at an angle. When you get it off the connectors have a locking clip that prizes off butt is still part of the connector then use small flat screwdriver behind the connector to flip them off. Hope this helps but no prizing was involved in taking the bag off
#29: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: lmilligan, Location: HertfordshirePosted: Sat Oct 15, 2011 7:36 am ---- I got it done now
#30: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Sat Oct 15, 2011 7:43 am ---- Did you just wait for the thing to discharge or take out the airbag ecu wiring under the consul? I took out the wiring as taking out the centre consul is like 5 mins to do. What do you think of the wheel on then?
#31: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: lmilligan, Location: HertfordshirePosted: Sat Oct 15, 2011 7:47 am ---- I waited for about 20 mins for everything to discharge, couldn't be bothered to take the wiring The gti wheel feels alot better I think happy with it!
#32: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: banboots, Location: AyrshirePosted: Sat Oct 15, 2011 7:54 am ---- I like them too but feel they are very shiney suppose it will take a bit of getting used to. I had a leather cover from Mr Steering on my other wheel but the wheel felt really thin. I'm so used to having momo stuff in cars but keeping the airbag seems like good sense but mines only been in a few days so still to see how I get on with it as I like the chunky feel of momo stuff and especially suede wheels (brilliant in winter)
#33: Re: Removing Airbagged Steering wheel Author: Mephisto, Location: ScotlandPosted: Wed Jun 20, 2012 1:33 pm ---- Ive tried to remove mine, When I push the screw driver to release the bar, the airbag pops of a wee bit,I can pull it out about a cm, but it seem to be jammed on at thye bottom..should i use brute force and just yank it off the rest of the way, or should it come off quite easily?
