#1: brake leak.. Author: linus1884, Posted: Tue Aug 23, 2011 6:25 am ---- hi all
i have a 1.4 GLX, i've noticed that the brakes have always been a bit soft and spongy... anyways the other day i noticed a flat on the rear driver side wheel, went to fill it up and noticed oil on the inside of the alloy rim, not sure where it has come from...
this morning i've noticed a pool of oil on the inside of where the tyre is, i havent driven the car, for safety reasons and also because the exhaust needs replacing...
am i right in thinking that the rear drum brake has a leak? is it possible the flat tyre has caused damage to the rear wheel?
any advice much appriciated
thanks

You can buy seal kits, but it's just as easy to change the cylinder. You will probably need new shoes too unless you can clean them up properly.
It won't have been caused by the flat tyre, but more likely just perished rubber due to age, or it is possible that the piston has popped out due to high wear in the brake shoes.
Easy job to do as long as you have a bit of knowledge, and don't forget the brakes will need bleeding too.

PAIR of rear brake cylinders & a new set of rear brake shoes
If 1 cylinder has failed the other wont be to far behind it.
