Engine running lumpy on idle and EML on

#1: Engine running lumpy on idle and EML on Author: Ali_H, Location: Chichester, Sussex PostPosted: Thu Aug 25, 2011 4:39 pm
    ----
Earlier today I started the car and it was running lumpy as f*** and antipollution fault came up on the display. Started it again and it was still lumpy so I drove it home and left it a couple of hours.

Took it down to my mate to get the codes read and it was running fine again. The codes that came up were P0011 and P0352.

He cleared them and it ran fine all the way home, about 10 minutes but now it's back and when cleared it immediately returns.

P0011 relates to the camshaft and that's always been there but never caused a problem.

P0352 relates to ignition coil, so i'm thinking new coilpack?

VVT solenoid? A common failure im led to believe?

I replaced the VVT solenoid less than 6000 miles ago, it threw up a different code then and it's been running fine since. Might take it out this weekend and give it a clean anyway though.

This is something to do with the ignition coil according to the reader.

P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
Yes, suspect coil pack

P0011 A Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance
That suggests if you've had your cambelt changed that it wasn't installed correctly for crank to camshaft timing

I had the cambelt changed at 49000, it's on 86000 now and never had a problem.

Could the P0352 fault be anything else other than the coil pack? And where's the cheapest place to get one from?

I've had the P0011 fault for quite a while on my car, and I know it's not running 100% fine.

Hopefully just a replace of the VVT solenoid will sort that out, only £50 trade price I'm told. Keep the thread updated, I'll be keen to know fixes your faults

Coil pack would cause a misfire. Solenoid failure would make it run smoothly but with less power. I imagine a cam sensor failure would do the same.

Could be hydraulic lifters at fault but would that throw up a coil pack error?

I've read that the coil pack is a common fault with 180s and there's people on Aussie forum who've reported similar symptoms. It's not misfiring though and it was running ok power wise but obviously not now the EML is on.

I would've thought the lifters would've throw up a different code.

Anyone know which Pug coilpacks are the same as the 180? I don't mind buying a new one but want to be certain that's what's at fault first.

Cheers Lee, not the same as a standard GTi though?

no, sorry. Needs to be the 177bhp engine

i had this a month ago. i think it had something to do with my service roughly 2 weeks before the problem started. i believe it had something to do with me sticking in some NGK plugs Sad
i replaced with some bosch supers, changed the coilpack, cleaned the VVT solenoid and a few other things i has suspicions about and and after a host or crap ....it worked!!!!

have you just recently serviced? i'm guessing you get this loss of power once the car has heated up a little so seems similar however i had P0351 which is Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction ...in other words the first, most left coil from the rail i am told.

did you get some other info from the code reader? P0352 at a wild guess could be the second coil, have a look/compare the spring under the rubber covers (needs a good yank to pull off) or try swapping plugs around, possibly with the first and see if you get the same code as me.

GODD LUCK!!

It does it as soon as it's started, once it's warmed up it's a little better. It's not been serviced recently but did happen after a spell of wet weather. I'll take a look at the plugs and see what they're like.

Replaced the plugs and coilpack and it's back to its rawring best Very Happy

Plugs were due a change at the next service and it seems the coilpack was misfiring when it got hot. Plugs were the dreaded NGK ones too, when I asked for Bosch Super they weren't exactly surprised Laughing Apparently they've been told not to supply NGK plugs for most Pugs/Citroens now.

£140 for plugs and coilpack seemed pretty good to me too.

Was going to suggust Plugs, sounds like the dreaded NGK plugs strike again Laughing

Sounds a decent price that, Atleast its sorted now Very Happy

I could be tempted to change my plugs now! My eml is on cant remember what the code was though. Wehn my car is ticking over it has like a misfire in it, car sounds fine but when your sitting in it during tickover you can definatly feel a wee misfire. Another thing ive noticed is when pulling away from a junction when cold the engine sometimes feels like its struggling, it would never cut out but feels like regardless how much you put the foot down its got limited power for around 2-3seconds then it returs to normal! Im near 100% sure my car is running on NGK plugs so might change them and coilpack while im at it to see if it cures it!

hi guys, my 206 gti is running lumpy in the morning but once it warms up it fine, no eml on so confused as to what it might be, the car shakes violently in the morning, also just wondering the idle speed may be a bit low, its idling at 750 rpm, surely it should be at 900 rpm for idle, could it be idle control valve sticking in the morning???

I wouldnt believe everything your rpm needle tells you, mine was showing 500 on needle, but 750 on diagnostics!

Just done a coil pack change and stuck some bosch super 4's in and fingers crossed, lumpy idle business gone, touch wood!

Ali.... Bumping an old thread in case you remember anything about your old P0011.

Got the same code throwing intermittently in the background on my 180.
Did the change of spark plugs solve this, or do to think cleaning the solenoid did?

P.S. RAAAAAAAAWWWWRRRRRRRR

Wow that was a blast from the past seeing my old pug pic! Remember the good old days of the beauty with its lumpy idle and expensive other issues lol. Anyway sorry guys but my old pug is no more, gone to pug heaven I think. Now the driver of a more costly Mondeo Zetec. Hope you find your peace with the pug. I never cured the lumpy idle completely I dont think, oh yeah I did sorry, I got rid

I replaced the VVT Solenoid in the end, cleaned it a few times and it just kept coming back. Was about 70-80 quid IIRC.

I've still yet to give it a clean, but I'll try that first and if it keeps coming back I'll replace it. Thanks for bothering to come back and answer! Wink
