i was coming out of a turn so i decided to floor it cause i was going up this steep incline.. all of a sudden the steering felt funny and the ESP light blinked for a while
it was on by the way, is there something about the ESP i do not know about ?
thank you

Yes, how the ESP system works
RTFM

How come?
Unless your on a track OR the car is stuck in the snow & your trying to dig it out I see no reason why the ESP needs to be switched off.

Only time mine is switched off constantly.
Although I sometimes turn it off if I'm at a really busy junction and need to set off quickly.
#8: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: deanparkr, Location: United KingdomPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 5:31 am ---- Does ESP slow cars down getting off from junctions?
Seems odd to turn off ESP, seeing as its a safety feature!

its mainly the traction control he's removing as the TC dulls the power to stop the wheels spinning
#10: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: Ali_H, Location: Chichester, SussexPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 6:10 am ---- Only time I turn mine off is the 0-60 runs.

I thought traction control regulated the brakes?

When accelerating fast it controls the throttle too, thus dulling the power
Think it also applies brakes but that's when loosing control

ESP reduces torque to control wheelspin [from a standing start], ABS isn't affected by it as far as I know

it only reduces torque [lowering rev limit] - it can't 'control' the throttle or brakes [that's the driver's job]

Why carnt it?
The ECU controls the throttle body so it can open and close when it likes, when my ESP kicks it it doesn't lower the rev limit, you can feel it adjusting how much throttle
#16: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 11:13 am ---- The ESP system controls:
Each individual brake
&
The throttle
Technically the 206 doesn't have a stand alone traction control system, its a marketing gimmick, the ESP system does the traction control function.

It does control the brakes.
#18: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: bisphenol-a, Location: AntarcticaPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 12:06 pm ---- that explains alot why it blinked
i'll turn it off when i wanna do sprints but i'll leave it on for any other normal driving

I thought that EBFD or whatever does the braking (with the ABS) and not the ESP traction control

EBFD ( Electronic Brake Force Distribution ) just replaces the rear brake compensator valve.
Cars with EBFD dont have the mechanical rear brake compensator valve fitted as the EBFD is built in to the ABS hydraulic modulator under the bonnet.
ESP on the other hand controls all 4 individual brakes & also the throttle.
#21: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: WilkyGTi, Location: Cumbria, UKPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 12:29 pm ---- The ESP controls both the throttle and the brakes, if your in a straight line and it detects wheelspin then it will kill the power, no need for brakes. On the other hand if it detects oversteer it will apply brakes to which ever wheel(s) is needed to correct the "manouver". I've experienced this in my mates Focus ST and i'm impressed with it, yes it takes away the thrill of driving but its also a safe way of finding the limit of your car!
#22: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 12:30 pm ---- New Focus you cant even turn the ESP completely off
#23: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: Mattie-RS, Location: A Track near you ;)Posted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 12:32 pm ---- Basically just leave it on, unless
A. Your on Track.
B. Need to accelerate quickly.

okay - I kind of understand that - did I mean EBA? (ps: I don't have a manual LOL)

I saw a Fifth gear test of the new Focus & Tiff was moaning about not being able to turn the ESP fully off
Ive driven 2 different cars with ESP fitted.
Mk 5 Golf = brilliant ESP system, you can have fun.
Astra mk 5 = crap ESP system, its far to lazy to cut in & lets the car get seriously out of shape before it wakes up & tries to help out.

Just watched it, he was busy with that steering wheel & not in a good way
#31: Re: ESP lights blinked Author: Schumi, Location: Istanbul / TurkeyPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 3:13 pm ---- GTI180 ESP controlling throttle and brake. But not just them. It also send ecu to decrase ignition advance. Ignition retard lowering torque and that recovery method for wheelspin.
PS:
Generaly I dont like TC but ESP works very well.

The Clio ESP is awesome, only activates when really needed, doesn't dull down the power to much, and if you switch it off its off
