#1: engine swap question Author: craigy00craig, Location: surreyPosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:19 pm ---- I was thinking about buying a lower milage engine for my 1.1 style as its currently on about 81k. I have seen some on ebay rangine from 100-200 quid for 40-60k miles.
If i were to buy one from ebay how would i be able to check that the miles are genuine and they didnt just make it up and are selling me one with 100k on it?

Of course, its done over 80k Paul. Only fit fr scrap now
#7: Re: engine swap question Author: craigy00craig, Location: surreyPosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:23 pm ---- dont think there is anything wrong with it but i thought for a 1.1 81k is quite a lot and it might not have a lot left to give... i can always put the old engine on ebay to get a bit of money back as well.
Do you not think its worth it then?
#8: Re: engine swap question Author: NorthantsBen, Location: Raunds, NorthamptonshirePosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:25 pm ---- no not worth it, if its running and sounds ok leave it imo
81k is naff all if its been looked after.
#9: Re: engine swap question Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:28 pm ---- Won't make the car worth anymore as its still done 81k if thats what your thinking
#10: Re: engine swap question Author: copey, Location: rochdalePosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:28 pm ---- just wait til it dies then do it, as said above long as you look after it it'll go for alot longer
#11: Re: engine swap question Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:37 pm ---- I once had an old Skoda with 80k miles on the engine. It had been serviced every 6k miles and when stripped the bores were immaculate. That's on an old crude pushrod engine. The TU is a fair bit more modern and 80k miles is nothing.
Keep it looked after and it should do twice that mileage.
#12: Re: engine swap question Author: craigy00craig, Location: surreyPosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:46 pm ---- ok thanks for the advise people
#13: Re: engine swap question Author: Seabook, Posted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:48 pm ---- if it doesn't break don't fix it.
the worse case is once you put the "new" engine in and then the belt snap on the next day
#14: Re: engine swap question Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 1:20 pm ---- My mates 1.1 has 110k and he hasnt serviced it for about 2 years now and she is still going strong
My mates 1.1 has 110k and he hasnt serviced it for about 2 years now and she is still going strong
My gti has 144k and is pretty dam good
and my frd's 306 1.9D explode under 56K
#16: Re: engine swap question Author: dtm_martin24, Location: BasingstokePosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 3:24 pm ---- my 306 1.4 tu has done 130k miles and is still going strong, mate of mines tu engine has done over 200k and still drives like nearly new, just make sure you service it regulary
#17: Re: engine swap question Author: Andrew, Location: Black Country Ay IPosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 3:59 pm ---- As above, you know your engine better than jim bob gypo on ebay's engine
I think it looks better on the records to keep an original engine that runs in sync with the car's mileage. I change my oil every 5k miles in the hopes it will prolong the engine life, maybe you could try that too
#18: Re: engine swap question Author: puggy206, Location: scunthorpePosted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 4:29 pm ---- If it ain't broke don't fix it
#19: Re: engine swap question Author: KyleHaich, Location: Airdrie, Scotland.Posted: Sun Sep 18, 2011 6:22 pm ---- Mines is a 1.1 and just hit 80k yesterday, my mate also has a 1.1, identical to mine (copying b*****d) and has done 117k and still runs with no problems..
#20: Re: engine swap question Author: PugJH, Location: NorthantsPosted: Mon Sep 19, 2011 4:42 am ---- Few questions
1. If you know the previous owner why not ask them if its been looked after
*thats me, yes it has, that engine is a beaut for a 1.1, 1st point of call, service it*
2. If you felt 80k was a large amount of miles, why did you buy the car?
*and you can't even say for the looks as half the things you want to change*
3. Why change for a 1.1 engine if your going to change the engine, i'd go GTi and i nearly did
#21: Re: engine swap question Author: karimali831, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Sep 19, 2011 5:14 am ---- The cost for the engine and labour will probably total the cost of your car. I'm coming up to 100k now and no sign of engine defects
#22: Re: engine swap question Author: Ali_H, Location: Chichester, SussexPosted: Mon Sep 19, 2011 6:00 am ---- A well maintained 81k will be better than a mistreated 40k one...
#23: Re: engine swap question Author: LilLew, Location: PlymouthPosted: Mon Sep 19, 2011 6:32 am ---- my old vauxhall corsa 1.2 went for 148k with 60k was me just ragging it but i always serviced it on time and premium oil
