Because ribbon only for the displaying pixel, while backlight problem will be cause by the small pin connection.
On the small connection pin socket, check on the soldering, see if there's any small tiny crack on the soldering? Last edited by kit325 on Sun Oct 02, 2011 6:10 am; edited 1 time in total

...the piece on the circuit board isn't exactly solidly in place, there is some play. So I might have a crack at re-soldering it anyway and see if it makes a difference. If it still doesn't work I'll know it's the ribbon for sure.
Thanks for your help.

Your display illumination won't be the same as this as this one is a single line display but you can get the idea of what to check for. This is how I cured this one with a dead illumination display

First of all check you have the right type of bulbholders. The two at the top of the picture are different types, the one on the left makes contact on the opposite side of the board to where you insert, the one on the right makes contact on the same side, they look similar and they both fit so beware
With all bulbs out, use a multimeter set on resistance to find out which pin of the connector supplies each side of the bulb circuit board tracks (On this one it was the middle two pins). Ok insert one bulb, now with your multimeter still set on resistance and touching those two pins then you should see the resistance of the bulb, around 10-20ohms, if not then you have a poor contact. Clean up the CB tracks carefully using an eraser or electrical contact cleaner and try again, you may even need to bend the bulb holder contacts. Once that bulb is done and making a sure contact then take that one out and do the others the same. Now you know all bulbs are going to work if they have voltage across them

Problem resolved!
I just had to take out the set of the display wires and put it back in again
