#1: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 1:08 pm ---- My driveshaft was slipping on Monday and yesterday it went. I recovered my car and had a look today. I already bought another shaft expecting it to be that. However its slipping inside the gearbox; Can we just confirm that it is f****d?
Also I was told the gear ratio's in 1.4's are shorter for some reason, can someone confirm this too?

#3: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 1:10 pm ---- is the differential working?
if you want to know the gear ratio check on servicebox
#4: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 2:45 pm ---- The diff seemed to be working. I am looking on servicebox but struggling to find it =/
#5: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: imjeeves, Location: Glasgow / WellingPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:41 pm ---- This a common problem with the MA box as the crown wheel is simply an interference fit. When the cars have done a fair milage or been rallied about the crown wheen breaks off its normal location.
Two options
1. Bin the box and get another
2. Get a machine shop to open the box and pin the crown wheel in place (i have had this done and it work 100% now)

so do you mean the crown wheel fall off from the differential?
can't believe that could happen hard to believe it can break through 8 bolts
#7: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:47 pm ---- Thanks for the info. If I stick my finger in the box I can feel something in the way but there is still a gap to get my finger down the box. I am better off with another box as its on nearly 110k. I can get a 58 plate box for £150 but I am just wondering about the 1.4 boxes. If its a bit shorter then that would be better. Can't find the info on service box though.
#8: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: imjeeves, Location: Glasgow / WellingPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:49 pm ---- Its not bolted in an MA box its pressed on. Hense why it breaks off!
#9: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:50 pm ---- is that a 206 box?
you have to make sure it run rod linkage and cable clutch.
#10: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Matt, Posted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:50 pm ---- I've got a box you can have for £100.
Done around 40k.
(I'm only in Manchester)
#11: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 4:11 pm ---- What engine? I will have to see as I will still need to pay someone £15 petrol; if I find anyone that will get it for me.

didn't know that
#13: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Matt, Posted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 4:30 pm ---- Think it's a 1.1 but not 100% without looking.
#14: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 4:49 pm ---- well check for me when you get a chance. Still looking into a 1.4 box but can't find any details
#15: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed Sep 21, 2011 5:16 pm ---- I did find this
I could get a 1.4XSI or ether of the rallye gearboxes if they fit.
#16: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Matt, Posted: Thu Sep 22, 2011 1:09 am ---- Afaik, any box will fit. As long as you get the cable/hydraulic aspect correct to your car.
Only difference will be the gear ratio's.
#17: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Thu Sep 22, 2011 5:52 am ---- That sounds promising. I found this:
I need to find out if its got a cable clutch now which it probably will do.
#18: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Seabook, Posted: Sun Sep 25, 2011 6:01 am ---- no idea at all; better check on the servicebox as i remember most RHD 206 run hydraulic clutch....

The box in your link is definately a cable clutch type. You can see the actuator arm in the photo.

Nick.
#20: Re: Oh dear, gearbox help :( Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2011 3:38 pm ---- Thank you but I already found my answer. I don't know a great deal about gearboxes. The S2 gearbox can also be found on the 206 XS. Why does the 1.6 have such a short ratio? Also how much difference is it going to make to acceleration and drive-ability? I am stuck between this box (on about 80k) and a 58 plate box with lower miles.
