Engine keeps running after ignition turned off
-> 206 Problems

#1: Engine keeps running after ignition turned off Author: booseph, Location: Co Durham PostPosted: Wed Oct 05, 2011 1:36 am
    ----
The other night after I turned my ignition off my car keep idling for about 3-5 seconds and gradually died, the engine management ligh talso came on . I checked the internal fuse box and all was ok , then I checked the fuse box under the bonnet, there was a 70amp fuse burned out (but not fully blown) , I think its an interface fuse, Im sure it runs to the internal fuse box. Anyway the next day I replaced the 70 amp fuse , the management light went off and the over run stopped. Now last night the problem re-appeared but the fuse seems fine (but my clock display has gone off now aswell). I have read some forums and gather it could be a bad earth or a worn fuel valve . Can anyone please offer more advice or has anyone had this problem before ?? Much appreciated

Correct. Smile

Next question. Have you recently made any modifications? Done anything to your car recently?

This was happening me, turned out the wiring for the stereo was causing it. Wires had to be changed over so the radio kept the stations in it's memory and turned off when the car was off, but two wires were in each others place so the live connection was permanently on. I'd check your wiring on your stereo for a start.

so you swapped the red and yellow wires around Paddy and it sorted out the ignition problems aswell?

I think it was the red and yellow wires, yes. Swopping them over solved the radio problem and also sorted out the ignition problem too.

Check the diagram in the stereo manual first though, it depends on how they have their cables wired, some manufacturers don't even need the wires switched over at all, but mine did and I put them in the wrong place!

When I installed the stereo it did not keep its memory to I did swap around 2 of the wires , it now keeps its memory . I done this over a month ago , would it just start causing the problem now ? Also i have just been out in the car and the problem has dissappeared ??? Would it be a good idea to disconnect the stereo totally when the problem comes back and see if it is the stereo ?

Cheers

Was there a stereo in the car before? Try putting it back in for a while (and returning the wires to their original places) and see if the problem persists. If it goes away, you've wired it up wrong. When it was messing up for me, it didn't happen all the time, so just because it has stopped now that doesn't mean the problem is gone for good.

Also make sure that the wires are not only in the correct place, but they are firmly held in. A loose one could be causing the problem too, so make sure you hear the click when you're putting them into the socket, and after you have connected the socket to the plug on the stereo, check the wiring again to make sure none of them have popped out whilst the plug and socket were being pushed together.
