#1: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: NathanG, Location: Ebbw Vagas (Wales)Posted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:14 am ---- Hi all, bought some brand new Bilstein rear shocks the other day. Fitted them and done less than 100 miles and the one is knocking its t*ts off. It was so bad that i have had to remove it and refit the old one i took off.
Its when the shock returns from being compressed that it knocks and vibrates through the rear of the car. With all the s**t roads in Wales it drove me round the bend. Slapped the old one back on and now its silent again, if not a little saggy.
Is this common. Just so i'm not going mad, their not specific sided are they?
#2: Re: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:17 am ---- Oil or gas dampers?
If they are oil dampers did you prime them correctly before fitting or just bolt them straight on the car?
#3: Re: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: NathanG, Location: Ebbw Vagas (Wales)Posted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:21 am ---- Gas dampers. They were only the cheap ones.
#4: Re: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:26 am ---- Either a faulty damper or not fitted correctly.
Swop it over to the other side & see if it still knocks.

I swapped the New one for the old one, all well and good, nice and quite. Swapped them back fir the new one, drove up the street started knocking as soon as i pulled off the drive. Put the old one back on and its quite again so it cant be fittment i reckon. Yeah may try it on the other side now.

#7: Re: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: NathanG, Location: Ebbw Vagas (Wales)Posted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:39 am ---- Yep, all brand new as their in the shock. They look like new. I thought bushes originally but had a look and their mint. Even when the shock is off its all smooth action when pressure is released but when it comes to the end of the action there's a little 'clonk'. When thats magnified eith the weight of the car the noise is mental.

#9: Re: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: V9977, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 8:20 am ---- Bilstein B4's will do this I'm afraid. Been there..
My mech became livid when I turned-up with a new set of these.
Turned out he was right: Much inferior to the OEM dampers in many ways.
However, after a fair few miles they seem to settle-down and are OK(ish)
but still knock on the out-stroke if you are not carefull.
#10: Re: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: NathanG, Location: Ebbw Vagas (Wales)Posted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 9:52 am ---- These ones are BNE-6887 and were ok in the begining but after 100 miles they've started to knock.
Oops just checked, they are B4. Any way of stopping them.
#11: Re: New Rear Shocks Knocking Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Mon Oct 10, 2011 10:25 am ---- I've had B4's on for ages and only knocking I've had was when the ball joint went, nothing to do with the dampers

We're talking for the rear shocks I think.
