#1: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 6:15 am ---- I have a 1.4 8v 206 and recently it feels as though there is something holding it back when i put my foot down, there is NO power at all compared to how it used to be. It is like this all the time, hot and cold.
Went for a drive last night and for a few seconds, it felt like it started juddering a bit as though it wanted to cut out, then went back to driving with no power again. It doesnt have a problem idling or starting, just doesnt have any power.
Does anyone know what could cause this?
Thanks

#3: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 6:54 am ---- It's across all gears. Takes ages to get from 20-30 in 3rd compared to how it should be and REALLY struggles to accelerate at all from 40mph in 5th
#4: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: MrZiggerz, Location: Milton KeynesPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 6:59 am ---- Sounds normal. Its a 1.4 8v and probably getting old?

And probably got used to the power it used to feel like so seems slower.

More than likely, 5th gear @ 40mph is not going to shoot off anytime soon.

Learn how to drive correctly then as you shouldnt even be in 5th gear at 40 mph
#8: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: 2Oh!6, Location: GloucesterPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:08 am ---- Lol just read 5th at 40, you're changing gear to early seems to be your problem..
#9: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:10 am ---- Na it was fine and had a lot more power about 2 weeks ago, it definitely isnt normal.
#10: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: MrZiggerz, Location: Milton KeynesPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:12 am ---- It honestly sounds like your changing too early and that you've got used to it. Did you buy it 2 weeks ago?
#11: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: 2Oh!6, Location: GloucesterPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:14 am ---- So did my golf when I bought it, 2 weeks later I bought a tuning box which revamped it again and now it's 'slow' again to me to. Is this your first car?
#12: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:18 am ---- I knew I'd get some comments about that, I don't drive round in 5th at 40 all the time, it was a reference point, I could have said 3rd or 4th at 30 as it still feels just as powerless
#13: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: MrZiggerz, Location: Milton KeynesPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:20 am ---- Should have said that at first bud. Maybe the plugs?
#14: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:21 am ---- I've had the car 10 months, and it was my 5th car. I know something is definitely playing up, just not sure what
#15: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:22 am ---- It had ngk plugs in, replaced them with bosch super 4s a couple of months back
#16: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Howey, Location: Kings LynnPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:27 am ---- What about oil and filter changes?
#17: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 7:31 am ---- It's last service was just after I got it so about 10 months ago, about 9k miles, so I think its due another in a couple of months
#18: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: MrZiggerz, Location: Milton KeynesPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 8:19 am ---- No harm in doing it early, especially if it cures your problem. Clean the TB too.

Also 40 in 5th is fine as i have the same engine and it pulls fine even like that (granted it doesn't like it too much untill it starts accelerating but then again my car doesn't like sitting in 3rd at 20), and to those saying learn to drive, doing 40 in 5th is how your taught now a days, it's how i was taught 4 years ago now, it's all to do with being "eco-friendly" (can't complain about it either considering my 1.4 gets 46 to the gallon doing it).

Eco friendly maybe one thing BUT shagging out your gearbox & engine in the long run is another
The standard of driving instruction these days is totally p**s poor, the standard of some driving instructors driving around in driving school liveried cars on there own is shocking enough!

Well i never said i did it constantly who doesn't enjoy a good bit of acceleration anyway.
A part of me does agree with you though, my housemate passed her test on her second try and ever since then she's been trying to give us heart attacks with her driving it's that poor (and to just prove a point she's crashed 4 times in just under 3 years...).
Either way my advice is check your coilpack and change gear later since the 1.4 in this doesn't like changing earlier than around 3k from my experience with it, it will do it but it won't like it, personally i prefer to keep the engine happier since it hasn't gone wrong yet.
#22: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 10:58 am ---- When I was learning to drive I was taught to change at around 2K RPM which is a torquey diesel fiesta was fine. But as soon as I got in my 1.4 that had to go up to at least 3K before going up a gear didnt feel like youd just taken off the gas.
#23: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 11:13 am ---- I'm in 3rd @ 40mph
#24: Re: 1.4 8v down on power Author: Stemh, Location: WiganPosted: Sun Oct 16, 2011 11:25 am ---- Im generally in 4th at 40, I was taught like that 4 years ago, the only time I'm in 5th at 40 is when I'm cruising at a steady speed and wanting to save fuel. Like I said, saying 40 in 5th was just a reference point because it should still pull a bit and it just isn't.
Il be the first to admit I don't drive economically most of the time
Ive cleaned the TB out, cleaned spark plugs, I was just wondering if people had had the same problem before I start spending money on parts, think a coil pack will be the next thing to check/replace!
