#1: Need serious help (not me the car) Author: splashdown, Location: UKPosted: Fri Oct 21, 2011 12:03 pm ---- Ok as in a previuos thread my gearbox is duff and needs a recon or a self fix and also a couple of other things, soooooo.
How do you remove a gearbox from a 2001 1.4LX manual petrol 2001 model (has anyone any tutorials I have seen a couple but not very informative at all)
How do you recon the gearbox (what tools are needed, whats the name for the replacement parts, hows it done?)
Whats the name of the spanner that goes onto of the wishbone nuts when removing the wishbones (star shaped sat ontop of wishbone)
Where would I find the bolts and nuts when replacing the wishbones (what are they called and where can I get some?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really have to save money as I am no way going to be able to afford getting it done at a garage.
Any links to pictures or videos would be brilliant.

Did you read the original post?
Im not a noob when it comes to fixing things I just need some direction, there is no point in taking it to someone as when they give me the bill they will have to keep the car as I havent got the sort of money they are asking for.

While its quite possible to DIY remove a gearbox, then take it to a place for reconditioning or fit a good secondhand replacement..... It needs something of an investment in tools, which I doubt you have. For example, do you have axle stands, trolley jack, decent socket set, decent set of spanners, etc. Not done a 206 gearbox removal but on other FWD cars you need either 2 trolley jacks, or an engine crane, so you can maneouvre the engine and gearbox separately to line them up and get it all nicely together without removing the engine, and without too much hassle.
The tool with a female 6 pointed star is a "Torx". Since the vast majority of bolts on any modern Peugeot are Torx, and you need to ask, I'm guessing you don't own a Torx driver set and have in fact never done any DIY work on the car (you need them to take the door cards off, for example).
To recondition a gearbox you need hundreds of pounds of unusual tools like a long bearing puller, extra long nose pliers, etc etc and the internals are complicated and need disassembling/reassembling with precision.
The only way I'd suggest to save costs is to make an appeal to see if any DIY-minded forum users are in your area and fancy doing this, for a couple of quid (more like £50-100 though, to pay them a fair rate). By all means help them out - if they ask for sugar in their tea, make sure you stir it thoroughly, for example.

I know its a Torx bolt but what size and is it listed as inverted?
And you dont know me at all so dont try and call judgement, thats just stupid, if you cant help or wont help why bother posting?

Thats bodging, torx sockets aint that expensive either
Risks damaging the bolt using the wrong type socket.

I have a 2 tonne trolley jack, ramps and stands also spanners from 6mm to 32mm the same as my socket set I also have lots of other tools aswell, I know its a torx but do they call it inverted? I ask because I am going to buy the proper sized one ( I could of worded what I was after a little better)
I have used torx before but recessed not the other way around and also as said its the size im after becuase I dont want to but stuff that will only have to be taken back.

I would happily pay someone a 100 quid to sort this out as its costs that are going to hammer me as I have been quoted so may prices all out of my range.

Thanks anyway mate nice to get decent answers, yeah I dont mind paying for a rebuild as the recons are quite highly priced, so far quotes of
450 + vat just for a box with mine as a replacement no fitting
395 + vat box only as above and 200 fitting + vat
295 + vat as above and 100 fitting + vat
Just looking for cheaper options as Im not scared of having a go or hard work unlike some of the workshy morons these days
