Knocking when turning.

#1: Knocking when turning. Author: TonkaTruck, Location: Sunderland PostPosted: Tue Nov 08, 2011 4:07 pm
    ----
First off, just like to introduce myself as I am new to this forum.

I do not own a Peugeot 206 myself, but on the plus side. I still own a French car.
Renault Clio dCi 100 - Remapped to 125bhp.

My sister has a Peugeot 206 1.5? Diesel HDI and the girlfriend has a 206 1.1 Petrol Look. If this forum is like any other forum I have been on, then 'No your not getting any picture's' Cool

Any ways, get back on track.

When steering the 206 Look, it make's a clunking noise. I have read about and heard it could be the Link Rods, Engine Mount's or CV Joint.

Am also guessing from what I have read, you can check it is the CV joint's by driving round in circles with full lock on.

If it is not the CV joint's is there any other way to determine, if it is engine mounts or link rods?

Am no expert on Peugeot's, what do you guy's think it is?

Sorry if this question has been asked plenty of times. Embarassed

Cheers in advance. Very Happy

Read about again (How exciting is my life?) and it could be the top mount bearing.
How can I tell if it is this, and what's it like to replace?

Does it clunk at a certain turning distance, IE towards full lock, and just once twice each turn or is it a clunk clunk clunk clunk the whole time your turned and in the same steering position. (Stupidly awkward to describe lol)

The top mount bearings are not all that hard to change if I'm honest, I've personally done mine twice now Once because I had to, the 2nd time just because I was rebuilding the suspension and thought I might as well do it while I've got it all out lol..

If it was the link rod's (Droplinks) they'd also be clunking over slight bumps and humps in the raod from experience, but to test them it's pretty easy, just get under the car and push upwards on the links, and also wobble them around, if they're shot they'll clunk/click/pah.. Just put the car up on some ramps, or even a wheel up on the curb will do it aslong as the wheels are on something solid to put the normal driving pressure on the links.

P.S. Welcome, and get ready for the pictures comments Wink

Cheers for the reply Ste, It's like a clunk clunk noise, at no specific point.
Is it right that, if you get someone to turn left - right on the wheel and look at the spring to see if it goes, clunk clunk, then it's the top mount bearings? Confused

I'll check the Droplinks tomorrow, to me it all points to the top mount bearings.

Where would you recommend buying these's from? I see they are on FleeBay for £9.95 each. But would preferably buy them from a shop.

If anyone require's pictures, this is all your getting.

DOH!!!

Yeah you can usually see the spring 'skip' if the topmount bearings are dry Smile They seem to hold there position very slightly then 'spring' to where they should be as it clunks while turning.

If it clunks at a standstill it sounds very likely to be the topmount bearings are shot, that or the balljoint on the wishbone, but it's more than likely the topmounts..

I usually get most if not all of my parts from Peugeot (I've got a local JCT600 Pug spares garage close by) failing that try eurocarparts online Smile

P.S. It's cool, I've already seen pictures mwahahahah! lol

when mine did a similar thing, was generally towards the end of full lock when stationary/ slow moving although not every time it was the top mount bearings

I had this noise on a wee Saxo and it turned out to be a broken front spring and shock

Looking to finally get some new top mount's, wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Will theses be the one's I need for a 1.1 Look?

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peu...618wt_1396

Also will I need to get some spring compressors to change them, or does anyone have a guide which I can follow?

Cheers

What the hell where you doing to go through that many drop links?

Last changed mine back in 2005 for genuine Peugeot parts & there still fine now.

Let me steal the topic and resurrect the dead...

I'm having a similar problem (probably). I can hear a knock coming from the rear wheels when steering. It's a single one, no matter which side I turn, and happens most of the time when it's stationary and I reverse/steer to hit the road.

Could it be one of these mentioned problems? Top mount bearings, drop links, wishbone? If so, on how much I would bleed my wallet to get it fixed?

Cheers
