done the test with the purge valve disconnected and made no diffrence , the revs just sat at 1000rpm and didnt settle down.

just removed the canister it seems to be in fairly good condition, i also disconnected the map sensor and started the engine , and it ran ok, i then pluged it back in while running and the revs whent up slightly , is this normal?

It's the valve that gets stuck open or closed, its not a problem with the canister.

Try taking pipe off, starting engine for a couple of minutes then block the pipe manualy with a bung and see
how it behaves. Note there are two pipes, send/return you have to do the one with the vacum on it.

there is 1 that comes from the canister that goes through the valve then the other pipe goes off to the inlet , i was just thinking ive been having problem with the eml coming up for the catalyst, could this have something to do with it?

at the moment its coming up wit p0505 - idle control systems (ive tried new icv and it just makes it rev to 3000rpm and then bounces ), but every 3 weeks it comes up with P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

If its throwing up P0505 surely that idicates problem with ICV.
I would have left the new ICV in there, making sure its the proper one and air sealed properly
and take it from there. You could have a couple of problems at the same time making it difficult to diagnose
what is going on. So take it step by step is the only thing you can do.

P0420 is on about your cat but since it says Bank 1 maybe the λ-probe before the cat has a problem.

I would also check thoroughly all the wiring to make sure nothing is choped.

but when i replaced the icv the revs go straight up to 3000 rpm then back down to 2000rpm and bounce between 2000 and 2500 , so it makes it a bit difficult to drive , it also does this when it has a ecu reset. i did check the original icv on the meter and pin a/d read 47 ohms and the same with pins b/c which indicates the icv is in working order.

Resistance readings could be OK and yet the mechanical opperation be up the spout.

If there was a change of behaviour with the new ICV, that could mean there is something more which needs fixing as well as the ICV.

You are going to have to take it one by one I think.

That should be quite economical if the need arises, but I would suggest you keep at it
as it can be sorted and then you will have a nice pug.

Best of luck mate, hope you sort it and let us know.
