Wheel offset on a 2001 206

Hi again fellas.
I have fitted 205-40-17 Alloys with a 38 offset to my GF's 206 Roland Garros.
I have used 20mm spacers all round which are fine on the rear but are too wide on the front. (slightly outside the arches so shes not happy ! )
Can anyone advise as to the smallest spacers I can use on the front ?
Too many different figures if Googled !
Offset figures vary from 26-34.(Haynes manual says 34. Definately not right on the rear but is the front different ? ) Most seem to state 28 ? Is this the same front and back ?
I've not tried the wheels directly onto the front without spacers, only the back and definately no-go, hence the 20mm spacers.
Sorry for the long post but I really need to get this right.

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice.
