checking coolant level

hi just having trouble checking the coolant level on my gti180,
ive tried shaking the bottle and shining a torch into it at the same time to try and see the fluid moving but arn't having any luck,

what do you all do to check it is there a easy way anyone has devised of doing this,

i hope so temp's are all normal, just checking all levels and noticed that i couldn't seem to see and coolant moving inside,

can you see it in there easily on yours?

Probably the same opaque plastic as in our CC ... impossible to see through!

change the coolant container and also change the coolant itself as it's winter,so it's about time :D,then you will see it very clear

yeah it's the same white opaque plastic,
bit of a rubbish design really. . . so how do you check yours then?

do you mean mount a new expansion bottle somewhere else in the engine bay? and where would you suggest is the best place to re-route it to??

I can see the coolant level fine on mine through the plastic.

If you take the cap off, you should be able to see the coolant in the expansion tank. If you can't see any even with a torch then sounds like your expansion tank is bone dry.

Get a new expansion tank, flush and change the coolant as Timon says. Failing that, at least top it up.

Just shine a torch into the reservoir and squeeze the bit coolant hose next to the radiator.

Or fill it right to the top and then drain it by bleeder point and estimate how much to let out to let it drop to the right level, its usually not that much, about 10 seconds of draining.
