my car has recently developed this problem - the noise goes away when I straighten up and speed up. sounds like maybe slipping belt

power steering problem? fluid? pump? belt?

no - don't think so - fairly constant pitch and then stops abruptly as I pull away

I had a very similar issue and it turned out to be a problem with the power steering fluid. I had a hold and all my fluid had drained away.

It may be worth checking the level of fluid and topping up if needed (I got mine from ASDA/Euro Car parts for bout £3 a bottle).

It sorted my problem for a while but in the end I needed to replace a pipe as it was broken. But for you it could be it just needs topping up.

Another cause might be wheel alignment, tyres rubbing noise when turning. Check your wheel alignment, is tyre wear normal? steering pull in to one direction on straight road?

If its only recently started it can't be tyres, & if it's only there when your on lock it's probaby not slipping belts. More likely to be a power steering problem like low fluid or pump.
