Engine mount BIG problem

#1: Engine mount BIG problem Author: gpvecchi, Location: Italy PostPosted: Wed Nov 30, 2011 2:30 pm
    ----
Passenger side engine support is practically a block of gum with a bolt that is screwed to a nut welded to chassis.
Now, my problem is that nut is no more welded! I replaced it with a "blocked" one, but engine movement makes it always loosen...
Anyone had this problem and managed to solve it?
Thank a lot!

you could always get a garage to tack the nut back on with a welder

Have you tried using an anti shake washer under the nut?

liquid thread lock.

anti shake washer won't handle that kind of force

weld a plate over the captive nut with a hole drilled in it.... This stops it turning.... I have just done this mod

Thread lock is useless, better of with a Nordlock washer, they never come loose Wink

Yes mate... The two ARB bolts on the rear radius arms, the rear damper bolts. We spanner check before each event now. The engine mount ripped the captive out of the chassis but with the 16swg plate over it there seems to be no further issue

Might be worth looking in to some Nordlock washers, there fitted to a lot of forklifts.

Once torqued up these never come undone by themselves.

You might damage the paintwork as you tighten them up while fitting.

Can't see it doing any more damage than a standard flat washer.

Never heard of them before but look a lot better than the spring washers I'm used to using.

Well worth a try, After about stage 3 the back end is clonking again....very annoying as it may disguise something a little more serious.

Thanks, macj, next week I'll prepare the plate and I'll test it...

You need to weld it in place. I clamped it in place with a bolt and washer to make sure it was aligned correctly, cover everything with a fire-proof blanket to avoid sparks getting in bad places. I would suggest fully welding it in place noce the captive nut is fixed. you can then paint it with a protective coat or two before refitting the mount

Oh, did you weld it to the chassis? I thougt that you just screwed the mount on it... I think it's just too difficult for my acknowledgment...

You could bolt it in place with the mount..... but fit a self tapping screw in one corner to prevent it turning

It seems I finally fixed it! I used an auto-locking nut (the one with a plastic ring) and a big "conical" washer (I don't know the right tech term) screwing the engine mount at about 20kgm instead of 2kgm as garage manual says...
