#1: Engine temps for 1.4i Author: V9977, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:57 am ---- I get 78 C on motorway, 89 C when standing.
Sounds abit low to mee.
What are other people getting on a 1.4i?
Thank you.
#2: Re: Engine temps for 1.4i Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Thu Dec 01, 2011 6:28 am ---- It can depend. My old engine ran at 90 all the time and the one I have now runs at 70 most of the time. I doubt its anything to worry about.
#3: Re: Engine temps for 1.4i Author: V9977, Location: Athens, GreecePosted: Thu Dec 01, 2011 6:29 am ---- What engines please?
90 C sounds better for mix-adjustment and for cat to work properly.
#4: Re: Engine temps for 1.4i Author: devotedsniper, Location: Tamworth, StaffordshirePosted: Thu Dec 01, 2011 9:03 am ---- my 01 pre-plex 1.4 8v runs at 80c on the move and if i get stuck in traffic it will sit at 90c (never goes above even if im sitting for 20mins with the engine running, fan never kicks in either). I doubt those temps are it's normal running temps though since my head gaskets just gone and it seems to have been on the way out since i bought the car.

Noticed with the cold weather recently that it's not really going much over 75 when moving but during the summer was going to anywhere around 80 - 90 when moving.

#8: Re: Engine temps for 1.4i Author: devotedsniper, Location: Tamworth, StaffordshirePosted: Fri Dec 02, 2011 1:06 pm ---- Thought i'd come back and say my new temps with the new head gasket is around 50-60c constant and it takes quite a while to warm up where before after 5mins of driving the engine would be at 70-80c.

Is your thermostat valve OK?

As far as i know yes, not had any issues for the first 60miles i did yesterday, where if the valve was broke it would overheat wouldn't it? I'm guessing the 70-80c constant was my cars overheating, the garage showed me my old head gasket and i'm amazed it's in one piece, the top and bottom were broken all the way across the only thing keeping it together was the sides.
I should probably mention the cars coolant system is running on water and detergent to flush the oil out at the moment, after 500 miles i have to take it back to the garage for it's check up and then change both the coolant and oil. I just hope the snow holds off for another 400 mile or i might find it frozen lol.

500 miles for a coolant flush, you can do these just running the engine for 30 mins.
NON bio washing powder / liquid / dishwasher tablets are ideal
#12: Re: Engine temps for 1.4i Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Sat Dec 03, 2011 8:01 am ---- According to the Haynes specs, the thermostat should operate at about 88c.
If your not getting much above 60c then i'd be looking at a fault somewhere. You might have an air lock which is stopping the car getting upto temperature.
Let the car get to temperature so the fan kicks in, then check to see if the top and bottom rad pipes are hot (i take no responsibility if you burn yourself). This will give you an indication if you're heating fresh air or if your thermostat is stuck open.

Exactly my thoughts summed-up properly.
I suspect the wax has fatigued in the valve on mine.
Cheers.

Well my coolant systems a complete mess at the moment, i was going to leave it for 250 mile since i've already done 70, i'm just waiting for my coolant to get here. I did think it a bit weird the guy said 500 mile, all the other flushing fluids i've used have always said 30mile or 30mins.

Well i was thinking it was quite low since i got it back yesterday, most cars i've driven usually sit just below the mid point on the gauge. My cars cold at the moment, but i did check since i went to the shop an hour ago, the top pipe (radiator to engine head) was luke warm (bear in mind it's been an hour), the one directly below seemed cold, and i gave the 2 pipes going into the cabin a squeeze and they were luke warm. I'm going over to a friends in a few hours so i'll go for abit of a country road blast and then check when i get to hers.
As for waiting for the fan to kick, it never does, even before the engine would sit happily at 90 or a little below in traffic, which i'm guessing isn't enough to set it off, unless that's bust too.
Where exactly is the thermostat on these? And as for the bleeding point's i'll give them a try tomorrow but i can only see 2, 1 on the pipe which goes to the cabin (below the air intake pipe after the filter) and the other giant allen key style one on the radiator. I really should get a hayne's manual, been meaning to if i'm honest but for everything i've needed so far my old 106 has done fine since it's the same 1.4.
