Its the ABS sensors on the axle that are different and WILL NOT FIT AS YOUR CAR IS NON-PLEXED AND THE 2004 IS MULTIPLEXED AND USES A CAN NETWORK...THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE!!!!!!!

If you have a compensator it will be on the rear axle, not on or near the ABS pump

Getting your hopes up about a 2004 beam is just going to end in tears, if you can cancel it and don't get it then you should. Research if you need a compensator, then get the correct year.

Funnily enough I actually have one that would be fine

I fitted a 2004 180 axle to my 2000 gti.
I just removed the extra arms, swapped the abs sensors and fitted new rear hubs, worked a charm.

Oh and I fitted my original calipers too.

So you basically replaced everything except the ARB and torsion bars which you can buy for £150 new? Laughing

I got it from a scrap yard for £30 as the bushes on mine were dead and I was skint with a newborn.
I used the 180 trailing arms but not the lateral arms due to the exhaust. It was easy work as its all very accessible off the car.
Was only 3 hours work.
Calipers off, hubs off, abs out.
New disks and pads, old abs back in, hubs on, disks, calipers on, hub nut and wheel.

Rear arms were wobbling all over the shop, I didn't touch the trailing arms on the replacement axle.

Garage managed to replace it with the 2004 Axle in the end they had to order in new aftermarket ABS sensors and fit them in, but they used my old brake caliper and wheel bearings. Works a treat now ABS works fine, Is there anything else i can do to prolong the axle ? I don't know who was saying u can't stick this axle on a 2000 GTI but u need lessons in not being IGNORANT. Anyway thanks for the help and for anyone else out there wanting a newer axle...

Just goes to show with a little bit of side ways thinking anything can be made to fit. Smile

nice one linkpad you must have a good local garage, also some interesting info obtained. just goes to show that anything can fit if you think about it long enough or have very deep pockets.

Good work

No one said it couldn't fit, but when you can get the correct one for the same price what on earth is the point on getting a different one then having to buy more things to make it work correctly?

I don't see your logic, glad to see it worked out though even if you had go the long way about it.

I know it was extra work but i could have just stuck a 2000 Year axle that was already worn down... I always wanted to use newer axle's.

Any smart person would have just bought a refurbed axle with a warranty, there cheap enough.

Mine ended up costing a similar amount to a refurbed one in the end. 150 for a used axle, plus ~160 for bearings and bushes then 100 quid fitting. minus from that 80 from ebaying the old axle. factor in the 4 visits to the dealer to swap bushes for the right ones and i think i would have been better off dropping it off and having it replaced 'properly'.
