#1: Can cold weather drain a battery? Author: devildriverxii, Location: StevenagePosted: Sun Dec 11, 2011 9:48 am ---- The reason I ask, is that every December for the last 3 years, by battery dies randomly. Last year I put a new battery in, and it still kept dying.
I had the alternator checked and that seems fine, all the electrics work I've done...which is one toggle switch seems fine.
I don't have an amp/sub connected to the battery any more, but every now and then it just wont start, and it's usually after a really cold night.
The rule seems to be, if there's frost on my windows, it will be dead.
Any suggestion on the first thing to test?
EDIT: also, I have no warning lights either.

Is it wrong for me to think 'a battery is a battery' as long as it fit's etc.

Very wrong
A decent battery will come with a 5 year warranty & wont be phased by cold weather if the charging system is in good order.

Bosch or Varta batteries have a good reputation for a reason.

Ah i didnt know that, out of interest know where halfords batteries are made? Heard good things about them especially if you have a trade card to get them cheaper.

No idea who makes the Halfords branded batteries, a Bosch on the trade card is cheap enough anyway

The starter motor has to work harder with the oil being thicker so it draws more current from the battery. Check the cold cranking current rating is sufficient. If not,
Check the battery doesnt have a dying cell. put the multimeter on it and start the car.... or attempt to. If the voltage drops off quickly it needs replacing.

I ran a multimeter across it, it showed a 14v when the engine was off, and it went up to 15v when the engine was turned on.

hot or cold it's not the cause of the dryness,what cause it is the chemical reaction and evaboration which the battery have while the car is running.
what was the reading in the min you started the car??while the ignition is working?
