Owning a car is the same as everything these days, you can either afford it or you cant, it sounds like you cant at the moment, so either get a better job, another job, or jack the car in.
The guys on here will no doubt point you in the right direction for fixing be it new parts or from a scrappers, but dumping your money worries on everybody wont help anybody.

45miles, 90miles round trip? That must be one hell of a job you enjoy?
At best that is 2gallons a day? Here is some shocking maths for you:
Two gallons @ £1.30 per litre = £11.70 a day.
Say you drive to work 5times a week, that is £58.50 a week.
£234 every 4 weeks.
£3042 a year, just travelling to work. Add tax, insurance and the general wear and tear....
Train!?
Edit: That maths is for a car averaging 45mpg (which a HDi will just about do) so could be more expensive if a different car.

A year train pass won't cost 4k.
It's not about what is more comfortable/easier. Its about what he can afford.
